van/cutaway question

I have seen some small cutaway buses with 2 chrome hood scoops on the hood. Does anyone know if they were functional, for looks or housed the turn signal indicators (my 89 charger had them recessed on hood). Just wondering if functional if they provided anything good as far as results.

found out that these are for HEAT dissipation in transit type vehicles which idle a lot and build up engine heat which then has an impact on the alternators of such vehicles. No connection to the air intake or anything just a hole in the hood with the covers. These are mounted mainly on the E3&450 diesels.

Have not seen what under the hood looks like but think they could maybe be plumbed into the air intake?

I don't know if these are what you are talking about. I use to own this 79 Ambulance ( 460 powered ) that had the two chrome heat extractor scoops. If I remember right they were just wide open with holes cut in the hood.

This is the only picture I have of it.

I plan on building some heat extractor scoops in my front fenders on my 89 E350. It's going to take some creactive metal working with the inner structure. I also want a couple forward facing air scoops in the hood. One to supply the air intake on the engine and the other to supply some cool air to the engine.

Yes that is them. Keep all informed on the intake venture, I do think thses could be made to work for cool air to intake IF a suitable hose hook up could be fabricated and was not too restrictive. Anything would almost be better than the current convoluted mess under the hoods now.

They could be used for intakes quite easily. But I wouldn't just hook hoses up to them. I would build a chambered box that mounts to the under side of the hood. And have a second box in the engine bay. Make them so that they seal against each other when you shut the hood. That is what I'm planning with the scoops for my hood. My 89 is a long term project. I'm doing a ground up build/rebuild. I've been collecting parts for it for 2 or 3 years now. I've got a couple other vehicles to finish this spring. After that I'm hoping to get started on the 89. I will be making a build thread when I start the work.

If you just hook hoses up to the scoop you will have an issue with water and debris.

And if you wanted to use those little chrome scoops. I would use both of them hooked together. A single one might be a little on the small side.

Same thoughts as yours, but I would connect to the air cleaner via a connection on the snorkel of some sort. Yes I think 1 would not work , might be iffy with the 2 even. But it is all just thinking at this time. Maybe have a drain type hole in the elbow or whatever to deflect rain/water and some debrie.
