4R100 identification - differences between the diesel and gas transmissions

Occasionally I am poking around my local junkyard and will see a 4R100 already pulled, waiting for a new home. I think "maybe I should grab it and have a little rebuild project at home" but what holds me back is knowing(?) that a gasser 4R100 won't bolt up to the 7.3. I've searched but not found anywhere that lists a way to positively identify a 7.3 4R100 from a 6.8/5.4/gasser version. Does anyone have this information?

Thru tactical google-fu and potato based alchemy I've found the gasser bellhousing has 7 bolts, diesel has 6. Torque converter is 6 bolts vs 4 for gasser.

I think that there are some differences in the internals between the gas vs diesel version but I am not positive on that.

Yes, there are internal differences. The diesel has some stronger parts.

Do you have any pictures of the 6-bolt vs. 7-bolt bellhousing?

I'm not so concerned about internals, since I'd be looking to do a rebuild anyway.

The point of this is exercise is to get information for the community so that anyone could walk in to a store, breakers/junkyard, back lot of a hoarder, etc. and positively say "Yes, that trans will bolt up to my beloved 7.3"
