LS Rear issues ...
Any thoughts on rebuild/reman/replace/upgrade?
If I wanted to look at salvage yards...how wide a net (year wise) could I cast to find something that would bolt right in? I know the sterling 10.5's been around for a long time, but not sure how many match right up with the 7.3's.
Thanks!
Josh
Hmmm...you recently had the pinion seal replaced and your truck hums and is sluggish. I know that you have to get the pinion set correctly (preload shims) otherwise there could be issues. Does the shop have a warranty on their work? That would be my first check.
have to decide if I go for the bandaid or the full monty. $$$ is an issue with the holidays approaching

whether you want to install the used diff vs rebuild is something you'll have to decide based on if you want to do this again sooner or later. But I can tell you that for 1800 the truetrac is the better of the two "new" setups. The truetrac doesn't wear out. So its 1800 once. The factory LS usually last between 20-40k miles depending on how much you use it. I had mine rebuilt and 15k miles later it was shot. For 300$ more tr he truetrac is the way to go if you decide on the full rebuild.
you removed the pan was there fresh shavings in there and what about the full plug magnet was it clean or did it have shavings?
Now they replaced they pinion seal, did they install a new crush sleeve and check pinion load before they removed it to install the new one? Did they also install a new pinion nut which they are supposed too?
Humming and sluggish after a pinion seal on a sterling 10.5 sounds like they simply removed the pinion nut and ujoint carrier removed the seal installed a new one and then I packed the crap out of the old pinion nut and now over tightened the pinion gear
Another reason why I do ALL my own work

i do what I can at home, but I also know my limits and when to call a pro...I’ve never had reason not to trust this shop...
if if I had a spare rear laying around and a few months to learn my way through and work on it in evenings that would be one thing...but I don’t...so to a shop it goes
$622 / for Truetrac that’s just 1 search. Double check your spline count etc. I would ask them to show you where they have it priced at $1800 F’n dollars?!

Ended up going to a different shop that specialized in transmissions and differentials...pinnon nut was re-used, and over torqued when the other shop did the pinion seal...pinion bearings were shot, and the associated play wreaked havoc inside...so full rebuild it was with a truetrac instead of the OEM LS ...
Headed back to the shop that did the seal replacement expecting a full refund of the parts and labor from that job 6 months ago...guess we'll see how it goes...
