Ford Escape 2002 and 2005

Experienced a failure of the automatic transmission in my '02 several years ago. The cause was a busted trans cooler in the radiator allowing water to get into the transmission. As a result the bearings galled and metal particles got into the pump, locked it up and the drive shaft for the pump broke. Had to rebuild the transmission. While I had it apart I decided I would install an external cooler bypassing the radiator instead of replacing it. To my surprise, Ford already had an external cooler. So on my other Escape, '01, I bypassed the radiator based cooler so I wouldn't have the same failure. Recommend for everyone to do this. To see if you have water or antifreeze in your transmission, after it has been sitting and apparently your's isn't being driven, loosen the transmission drain plug and before it's all the way out water/coolant or trans fluid will begin to drip out. Also look to see if your coolant reservoir is murky, has oil missed with coolant.
