New person with some C700 questions

Hello all! So, I'm actually fairly new to auto mechanic stuff but have been working through a lot on my own working on simple stuff like gen1 econoline vans. I did something stupid and long story short I have a 1974 C700 with a 391 now sitting in my yard. It was running when it arrived just missing a radiator and having a few things that need to be addressed besides that. Otherwise I saw it run and I got to move it into it's current resting place. I've been working through trying to get some simple issues worked out so I can at least move it around simply or even drive it to someone who can help me with more intense aspects of the repairs I need. As I button stuff up, there is one thing that is really throwing me off. I have this one hose that is only connected on one side and I cannot for the life of me determine it's purpose or what it should connect to. It looks like it is connected to something just behind the water pump, but I could not fully tell. I cannot seem to find any other spots that it looks like it might have been reasonable to go to. It was zip tied to seemingly be out of the way of other stuff. I was hoping someone might be able to help me determine the real purpose for this hose and what I need to connect it to. I also may be massively wrong about so many things, but I'm looking to learn. I've had a hard time finding really usable information on these vehicles and engines, but I'm sure folks with a little experience can help

Also, while I'm at it, I'm trying to find a new radiator that will be easy to fit. So far my salvage yard efforts have not paid off. I was wondering if there were any thoughts about this: https://www.truckid.com/be-cool/dire...mpn-60025.html
The fitment list says it will work on my year C700, but I'm very very skeptical.

Welcome to FTE!

That radiator you list says it will fit, but I would make sure they allow returns if it doesn't fit. That seems like a steep price, but I remember my dad bitterly complaining about the cost of re-coring a radiator 40 years ago, something around $375 iirc.

That hose might be a heater hose, you will simply have to dig around to find where it goes. One heater hose should come out of the water pump below one of the radiator hoses. The other one should come out of the intake manifold, again passenger side towards the front. Picture of the pump here:

Hard to say with a picture off ebay if one or both of those is actually a FT engine water pump!

OK, so what is the plan for this truck?

You can post a picture of the warranty plate off the driver's door. It has the VIN, and axle and trans and other info that will help.

Good luck!

So, I made some discoveries. After reading around this forum and looking at a lot of other pictures, I came to realize that this is indeed coming off the water pump. My view was obstructed by the power steering pump assembly. This hose appears to be the "coolant bypass hose" as I determined from other posts and pictures. However where it is supposed to connect to the intake manifold, the connection snapped off!. Thats why this thing is flapping in the breeze.

What I need to know now is whether or not the connection on the intake was part of the casting or if it's a threaded part I can replace. At least right now I really don't want to take the manifold off. I'm currently building a "shop" of sorts on a property I recently bought. For now I have no indoor place to work on it and it's now cold time here in north east PA. Getting a new manifold seems like a pain, but if I do, does it use the same gaskets as the FE engines do?

I'll post a picture of the warranty plate soon. My plans for the truck though are to make it car hauler out of it. It'll need to have frame shortened though. It was a former box truck though the box is gone now, it's all frame.

By-Pass hose: One steel tube in the water pump, another in the intake manifold, both pressed in.

The tube in the intake manifold is the usual culprit, rusts out. When this occurs, a bit of it may remain in the manifold.

This is a 5/8" O.D. straight tube, 2 1/2" long, then is cut to fit. Same as 302/352/360/390 and etc Ford Passenger Car/truck V8's.

Ford part number C5AZ-8555-B should be available from any auto parts store.

Oh cool! Thats great info, thanks! So it looks like I'll be needing to take the manifold off. In that case, are the gaskets for FT intakes special or can I use an FE one?

FT's use different intake manifold gaskets than FE's.
