Dana 80 carrier size clarification please

Over on the Super Duty part of the forum I'm trying to help someone who may be buying the incorrect carrier for his Dana 80 3.73 geared axle .
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1557794-limited-slip.html
I found out the hard way that Ford use a slim ring gear on 3.73 geared Dana that utilises the 4.10 carrier, I'd be grateful if someone else could provide input & clarity on this as most suppliers don't seem to show this, I only found the information on Just Differentials website.
Thanks guys

What year truck? The early trucks with the dana 80 only came in 4.10 ratio. When I ordered mine that's all I could get. E99, dually. Not sure when the 3.73 with the dana 80 had 3.73 gears if at all.

My E99 had 3.73ís with an open diff. I ordered this back when he had it for $250 , and regeared to 4:10ís. Everything went together perfectly.

I’m the one Shovelhead helped out, my truck is a F350 Dually, 2 wheel drive, long box 7.3. It came with a 3.73 open differential, year 2000, build date 09/99, apparently these Dana 80’s had a thinner ring gear and require the 915A450 Trutrac

Hopefully this resolves the situation and makes things a little clearer, also, hopefully this is brought to the attention of the people selling these units

Short version. All this applies to the 99-03 Era of ford trucks.

Dana 80 has a carrier break. 4.10 and numerically higher is one carrier and 3.73 lower is another. The surface the ring gear bolts to is in a different spot left to right as you look at it installed in the rear axle.

Ford decided to use a special thin 3.73 ring gear in order to use the 4.10 and up carrier in all dana 80 axles.

Thanks for the replies confirming the information, this is a Ford only issue, but why do most sellers not show it? They all show the carrier break point as being 3.73, which is correct for other manufacturers, Just Differentials were the only one to show the correct information.

My build date was 9/98, with the 4.10 posi. I tried and tried to get the 3.73 but they wouldn't sell one with posi. Maybe that's where the difference was. Between posi and open. Mine is also 4x4 but I wouldn't think that would of mattered. It's also a CC LB.
