I have a 2017 F-350 CC 6.7. the owners manual states this-(1)"For 2017 models, disconnect the fuel line quick connect coupling from the in tank fuel pump. For 2018 models and later, skip this step but insure that the fuel filler cap is closed before draining the filter. If the cap isn't closed, the filter will siphon the fuel tank even with the anti-siphon valve".
(2) "locate your filter"
(3) "Drain the diesel fuel conditioner module. Turn the drain plug counterclockwise until it stops. Do not use any tools to loosen the drain plug. Drainthe filter, approximately 0.53 gal (2L), into an appropriate container. Do not use the fuel from the module".
(4) "Disconnect the electrical connector".
(5) "Fully loosen the bolts securing the lower portion of the diesel fuel conditioner module housing".
Note: Do not fully remove the bolts from the lower portion of the diesel fuel conditioner module housing.
(6) "Remove the lower portion of the diesel fuel conditioner module housing".
(7) "Slide the filter element toward the drain plug to disengage the securing clips".
And then the obvious to reinstall the filter.
It's kind of strange that a 2017 owners manual says what to do in 2018 and later models
Is it safe to say that if you open the drain valve, drain off a quart of so of fuel and it stops, that when the fuel filter compartment is opened that there won't be a flood of additional fuel?
Correct, mine drained out apprx. 3 qts. of fuel, then stopped. Removed filter housing and not a drop left.
I'm going to assume all of the 6.7's have the check valve, its not an option or a package deal,......... more like standard equipment. Perhaps some trucks drain out more fuel than some is because of the fuel level in the tank. The lower the fuel level, the more air volume above it, and once it begins to drain it pulls a vacuum, and the air volume takes longer to evacuate????? I don't really know, just a guess. When I did mine I was willing to allow for two gallons to drain out.......max, if it kept draining then I was going to try the 1/4 tank thing. But all is good and I know what to expect next time.
Just did mine a few weekends ago. IIRC, I had over a half a tank. Drained the separator and slightly over half a gallon of diesel drained out. Nothing else drained the rest of the job (both filters).
