Put a Comp Cams 268H in it . That'll work with the stock valve springs. Then put a Holley 500 cfm 2 bbl on the intake and call it good

Thanks guys for the feedback. I had though about the 500 awhile ago but now that you guy bring it up it may be the best option at this time.

I used to have a Holley 500 on my 77 bronco's 302. It ran very well on the street and passed emissions, but was a completely useless turd off road. Had to go back to the 2100 but I knew fuel injection was the only real solution.
So in went a roller 5.0 from a 91 mustang but it had a few weak holes so it snowballed into a 347 stroker with trick flow heads, FI intake, big MAF, TB, injectors, etc. Then that lead to a fully built C4, 456 gears, Detroits, chromoly axles, and so on. So ya I've been down that path...

I've used the 500 on two 302's, two 390's and a 400. Never had reason to complain about any of them (3 carbs in 40 years) It was the most dependable Holley I ever used.

Well I finally made a decision on what to do with this motor, sell it as is and go with a money pit 460. And so it begins....

Your right about about the money pit!
Engine plus conversion mounts, different transmission, different exhaust, possible oil pan mods, an extra 100+ lbs on the front of the truck.

yup. but I can weld my own mounts. No factory married transfer case FE C6 so would have to build one from 2, as I don't want to sink money in a divorced setup. Exhaust has to change anyhow. Ford put 460s in 2wd dents so oil pan, headers and other items are available. Get 70 more cubic inches without buying a stroker kit. Used Parts are less expensive and much more readily available. There are good and bad about both FE and 385, I like them both. If I wasn't converting to 4WD I would have stuck with the FE.

460 is lighter weight from my searches. but yes a NP205 and a dana 60 will add weight.

Iron vs. iron stock motors the 385 is said to be 100lbs heavier. If you have seen them side by side out of a vehicle you would wonder why the 460 isn't 200lbs heavier.

Changing to 4x4? Are you swapping frames?
2wd and 4x4 have completely different cross members and steering sector locations.

That 4.36 bore needed a wider block

Yes. No. 2WD frame will get lots of modification and will be set up for front coils and DOM radius arms, x-over steering and so on. I will be starting a thread on the conversion shortly.
