The thing is that back then, ALL rear bumpers were optional, and Ford did not offer a step bumper until 1968, so dealers usually bought aftermarket step bumpers.

Here in CA, the Fey Bumper Co. offered at least 10 different step bumpers, gave the dealers a rack that could be placed in the showroom with all 10 types shown.

The aftermarket bumpers usually have the brackets welded to the bumper, the Ford brackets bolt on.

Here you go from the 72 accessories catalog:
C9TZ-17906-A

No factory chrome step bumpers unless it was a contour bumper:

Might be one from LMC, or a Dent bumper, etc.

This is an aftermarket (gypo) replacement 1980's step bumper, it does not match the original, so was not used on any 1960's or 1970's F100/350.

See parts catalog pic of correct step bumper in post #13.

There were TWO different step bumpers:

C8TZ-17906-A painted: 1968 F100/250 from serial number D26,001, 1969/72 F100/250.

C9TZ-17906-A Deluxe (chrome): 1969/72 F100/250.

Bumper c9tzchrome

Dennis carpenter makes a chrome step bumper that the part number starts c9tzthat bumper Idental to my bumper.I dont have a poc rv bumper that was made in china..my bumper has Bolt on bracket not rv welded . My truck has the heavy duty towing package with heavy duty step bumper that is chrome plated not a painted poc.any one who spends good money on a camper special and uses a painted bumper doesn't have very good sense.wrong number c8tz.chrome step bumper.I'm going g to restore this truck but I have pictures of the truck but dnot know how just to settle the issue about the rear bumper. It is starting to look like my 71 cs sport custom is not worth restoring my bumper doesn't look like any fey rear bumper.my bumper has chrome diamond plate on top .

Compare your trucks bumper with the pic in post #13 of the genuine Ford bumper.

The 1968/72 bumper does not look like the Carpenter bumper. The bumpers/brackets used 1968/72 will not fit most 1973 and later trucks due to the width between the inner frame rails behind the cab.

33 1/2" width between the inner frame rails: 1961/72 F100/350; 1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys), 1973/79 F350 Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase.

37 1/2" width between the inner frame rails behind the cab: 1973/79 F100 2WD/4WD & F250 2WD; 1973/79 F350 except as noted above; 1975/79 F150 2WD/4WD; 1977/79 F250 4WD (not High Boys).

I bought two of these trucks brand new (1968 F250 Ranger 2WD//1971 F100 Ranger XLT 2WD), sold parts for them since they were new...and know what the step bumpers look like and fit.

Just because Carpenter's bumper has a C9TZ prefix, does not mean it's correct!

Carpenter is notorious for inventing some Ford part numbers. Since most potential buyers have no Ford parts catalogs, they are unaware.

But most of Carpenter's Ford part numbers are not fake and Carpenter besides selling repro parts, also sells NOS parts.

Actually ND, the DC chrome bumper has a C8 prefix, and that is why I picked it knowing it wasn't a stock 72 bumper that he said he had. I do have a question on the 72 Sept. 24, 1971 pricelist. It only mentions the contour bumper, painted C8 step bumper, and the flareside bumper. Was the C9 Chrome step bumper only sold through the dealer parts department as an upgrade? Growing up in Idaho, I never saw any Fords with a contour bumper or a chrome step bumper until the 80's.

Just because the Carpenter bumper has a C8TZ prefix, does not mean it's a Ford step bumper for a 1968/72.

1973/79 bumpers are different than 1968/72, 1980/97 bumpers are different than 1973/79.

Does the Carpenter bumper resemble the parts catalog pic in post #13? No, it does not. No 1960's/70's step bumper has 3 embossed lines on its face.

1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog lists two step bumpers: C8TZ-17906-A & C9TZ-17906-A that the description says "Deluxe" which means it's chrome (see pic below).

There are hundreds of thousands of CS's. Everyone has one. If you have delusions of grandeur and $$$,$$$ of restoring Ford CS', you are sadly mistaken. Enjoy what you have, or quickly sell it since you can't have your dream of $$$,$$$.

You state the bumper comes with the Sport Custom package, so it would be stock genuine Ford.

However, if it matches the Carpenter bumper with its 3 embossed lines on its face, the original bumper was replaced at some point.

Look at page 7 of Fordifications 1972 Ford Truck accessory brochure, it shows the step bumper. Does it look like the Carpenter bumper? No it does not.
