If memory serves your next step is to remove the contact button in the center of the brass disc. It has a small spring and long wire connected to it that runs through the steering wheel shaft that connects to the wiring harness under the steering box. Disconnect the wire there pull on the contact button and the whole cable assembly will pull out. Next remove the brass disc by gently giving a 1/4 turn with a pair of pump pliers . It should pop off. Noting the position of the horn button retaining spring remove it. Now using an appropriate sized impact socket while holding the steering wheel use an impact gun to gently rattled off the steering shaft nut. Again note the position of the horn contact cup and pull it off. Now using using a 2 bolt steering wheel puller tighten it down til the steering wheel pops off. While the steering wheel is off check to see if there is a little plastic spacer slid in between the steering wheel shaft and the inner race of the shaft bearing inside the column. If its missing you will want to replace it. Mid Fifty sells them. It really helps makes a difference with the feel of the steering I think .

I took the wheel off of my 54 several years ago without a puller. I yanked on it with my feet firmly planted on the floor. I just kept pulling and yanking using different types of pressure on different parts of the wheel. If you are replacing the wheel have at it. You could even use a rubber mallet on the under side. Be very careful with it if you plan on reusing the same wheel. You can cause more cracks in it.

**** Just be sure you leave the nut on a few thread so the wheel doesn't come off and bop you in the nose!

I'll second that suggestion. Buy, rent, or borrow a puller before you do anything else. Abe's method works too, but you have to be careful and it's potentially a lot more effort. Google some how to videos on Youtube as well. Here's how it all goes together.

Welcome to FTE, by the way.
