Arrow KC s300 turbine / T4 S366 testing

Well, got motivated and put some gauges in my truck to see what my turboo is doing.

Truck is a 2001 CCLB F350 4x4
3.73 gear, 255/85r16 tires
GTP38 Van turbo, 4" ATS housing, 9+0 billet compressor, 70mm KC SXE turbine, 1.15ar
DieselSite Legendary 4r100 + TruCool cooler
6637 air filter
4" turbo back, 4"x12" Dynomax Bullet, 4"x51" Donaldson Muffler
Tuner: Old SCT Flash tuner that came in the glove box of one of my tucks.
Tune: Race/Extreme (whatever the highest setting is)

Yes I know there are about 100 different tuners out there that are way better, run cooler, less timing, etc etc. One thing I know is this tuner runs hot. On an old 2000 ZF6 truck I had it would hit almost 1450 on a hard WOT pull.

To start I have a video running unloaded. Sorry, no 0mph digs my tires are brand new. I have a variety of trailers I can tow including, 22ft bumper pull camper, 24ft GN stock trailer, and a 35ft 4 axle flatbed that can haul my OBS for added weight.

Video #1
Unloaded WOT from a 10-15mph roll up to around 65mph. Boost peaked at 27psi and EGTs were 1300* degrees when I let off. Will they keep climbing?--Not sure. I also did an OD-off WOT pull from 50mph up a local 10% grade. EGTs and boost were the same. Dont really like this tuning since my truck has PMRs but all it all it runs pretty good. Next will be hooking a trailer to it and maybe checking out the Boost/EGT that the other 2 tunes produce.

A little more before I tow with it.
Boost comes on around 1650rpm and is spooled up good by 1800-1850rpm

Flat ground 55mph; 600* EGT 1psi boost

55mph slight incline; 700* EGT 2psi boost

45-60mph OD lug (as much throttle before downshift); 850* EGT 4-6psi boost

0-55mph light throttle; 700-800* egt 8-10psi

0-55mph 1/2 thottle; 800-900* egt 10-13psi

Unloaded driving it is pretty tough to break 1000* egt. Yes it did break 1300* on a few WOT pulls but I dont usually drive that way. Would like to get a Hydra in the future for the better/modern tunes.

Here is a picture of the trailer and OBS I will tow for the "heavy" load. Will likely hook to my 24' stock trailer next for a "mild" tow.

This is the compressor / 360 kit I am running in both of the turbos I built. Decided to go with the equal length blade compressor mainly for the sound. I have ran stepped blade wheels in a ported housing in the past and the turbo is just too loud.

Just looked it up, SCT Flash on the Race tune is 110hp over stock.

Did a little more testing with a different tune. Put it to "street" which according to SCT is 85hp/130lb-ft over stock. Did some similar 15-70mph pulls at WOT like I did on the "extreme" tune.

Boost peaked around 25psi this time. EGTs just touched 1250* when I let off at 70mph.

Will be towing with it either this week or next. Looks like it will be the 22ft camper. It weighs in around 6500lb loaded. So far I am happy with the numbers this turbo is putting down. That can change when I start towing but can't believe by too much.

Right now I have an S366/74mm turbo and valley T4 mount that I fabbed. This turbine came out right when I was about to fab up-pipes for the T4 mount. That came to a stand still and it's not looking to be worth the work to put it on this truck. Time will tell on that.

With stock in injectors, there is no such thing as a 110Hp tune.

There is no such thing as 140hp over stock either but it is an advertised claim from a lot of tunes. At least 110hp is slightly plausible. My guess would be maybe 320hp+/- at the wheels. Don't really care though, stock inectors are what they are.

My OBS makes 355hp on a 140hp tune with 95cc.
(*Insert sarcasm*) actually 370hp with the K&N filter.

Have been driving around on the Street tune lately and got to get it out on the freeway. The new transmission bangs the gears pretty solid. Did a half dozen on ramp merges at WOT trying to get it as hot as it will get unloaded. Speed limit around here is 75mph so I could really open it up. This transmission will hold at 3200rpm 3rd gear unlocked, locks and drops to 2800rpm or so. Pretty aggressive and I like it. Hit lockup on the last merge and it blew apart an IC boot clamp at 26psi. Have still been unable to break 1250* in the 85hp Street tune even running it as hard as I can.

It does not drive like the stock turbo at all. Smoke output is Zero under boost in the street tune. Has some some down low but has been building 3psi @ 1500rpm. Had a little boost leaks in my PSI gauge and a leaking boot that I fixed.

Update this a little.

One of my other trucks is a 2000 Excursion 235hp. Truck has a 6637, 4" turbo back and one of these turbos, SXE turbine with a 9+0 billet compressor like posted above. Stock tuning and no gauges on this truck (wife's truck). Anyways, just towed 1200 miles with it pulling a 5500-6000lb bumper pull camper. Took it through the mountains a bit on I75 through Jellico and Look out MTN. I have made this trip multiple times on the stock turbo, stock + ATS housing and now with this turbo. One thing I noticed is the weight of the turbine keeps the turbo spinning and in a happy range when letting off the throttle. Turbo is almost silent with the stock compressor housing and pulls through 2200-2500rpm so nicely. In comparison the stock turbo seems cutoff at the knees and looses spool so quickly.

Seems like this may be a good option for the fellas that need to or want to stay with the stock turbo. Thanks for reporting back to us with an update.

Next I will be taking the same trip with my F350 that has got the Van turbo/1.15ar/sxe. Took care of some little boost leaks since the first post. At first it was hitting 27psi in the hottest tune and 25psi in the tow tune (45hp). The leaks must have been around the intake spider. Now the tow tune hits 27psi no sweat and throws an over boost code. Will need some better tuning g down the road for sure. Boost also came up to 4psi @ 1500rpm now and can pull off 8psi @ 55mph. Since fixing the rest of the leaks overall EGTs are more stable. The other day I hooked to my bumper pull (5500-6000lb) in "street tune" (85hp) and drug it around. Ran through a couple merging senerios with the truck and trailer. Close to WOT from a stop all the way to 65-70mph. (Thanks built transmission). Not until around 60mph 4th gear did the needle start heading to 1200* and just before letting off it tickled 1250*. This was before fixing the little leaks, the MAP line that attaches to the spider was the culprit. On a decent unloaded acceleration running 15-17psi boost EGTs will not break 950*

Not to beat a dead horse here, but there is only so much a tuner can pull out of stock injectors. ~60 HP is the maximum that can be stretched out of stock injectors, so using the "85 HP" as a measurement is not accurate.

Also, most tuners (not all) will only make changes to the shifting of your transmission in the heavy tow tunes. Nothing much is done to the fuel or anything else concerning how the truck runs, other than shifting. So, for me in my ZF6 truck, if I were running a heavy tow tune from Gear Head (which I did for many years), I was running a stock tune and thinking I was doing well with the EGT's staying below 1200*. Well, of course the EGT's were below 1200* towing a 12,000 lbs trailer, I was using a stock tune renamed to heavy tow tune.

Where the difference comes in tuning is the "hot" tunes. Like using a medium or light tow tune or even a street tune. This is where fuel is added, but again with stock injectors you cannot plan on too much more fuel. This is where the turbo picks up the slack and makes the stock injectors shine. Yes, single shot or hybrid injectors would do much better with a good turbo setup, but that is obvious.

If you are monitoring boost PSI, you should also be looking at exhaust back pressure because a ratio of 1:1 is the goal. Looking at one measurement is only half the equation to getting a solid performing engine.

I agree with what the stock injectors can put out. Just referring to what they label the tune or otherwise I would just call it tow, street, race. AFIK this tune only changes line pressure or shift points when you go in and modify them yourself. It is an older SCT flash tuner with transmission options programmed into it. I leave it all stock per recommendation of the transmission builder.

As far as back pressure readings. I find them pretty useless unless you are pushing 30-40psi+. I have a Ford F700 with a big I6 7.8 Brazil diesel that is turned up. It brought a lot of forum arguments up when I was working on controlling EGTs and turbo selection that I needed a back pressure gauge. Ended going with an S366 that would pull 25psi and top EGTs at 1300* (19* injection timing) and listened to everyone and built an exhaust pressure gauge. Turned out it was a completely useless gauge. The most it showed me was that I was indeed running 1:1 as was suspected based on EGT and Boost pressure. Not to say it is not useful in certain situations.
