New oil pump still burning oil NO CEL

my truck is a 99 f250 super duty with the 5.4l.
i was having a problem in which I thought was oil pump failure (oil burning and dummy pressure gauge acting up) I just replaced the pump and re did the timing. I’m pretty disappointed to say it didn’t really “fix” my problem as the truck is still smoking and does not like operating once it warms up ( smokes but has good power and acceleration leaving my driveway but throws a fit after driving down the road for a minute or two) can’t get her to throw any codes. I had one p0355 that boiled down to being a separated wire to COP and haven’t had any since. I’ve never had it overheat, no coolant loss. I’m stumped and just want to get her running right again

Burning oil even after replacing the oil pump, would not stop it from burning oil. Bad rings bad valve seals. How many miles on the engine? Did you do a compression test? What do you mean by it throws a fit after a minute or two down the road? Could it be that you did not get the timing correct when you re-did that?

the timing I’m 100% sure is right and the motors probably got over 200k. I want to do a compression check though I’ve never done it before so not only do I not know how I also lack the tools for the job. As far as the POS throwin a fit it’s kinda hard to explain through text but it’s like once it warms up it doesn’t want to perform properly. I wish I could add a video on here. If I were to upload a video to YouTube and post the link, would that help?

...oil burning and dummy pressure gauge acting up.....
If a bad oil pump was the root cause of your issues, then the oil burning is because some wear surface, like a cylinder wall or a crankshaft main bearing, has been damaged due to a lack of lubrication. Replacing the oil pump won't correct that damage.

A YouTube gif might help to diagnose. Have you changed plugs and possible COPS?

This has ZERO affect on an engine that is burning oil. It is either poorly sealing piston rings or worn valve seals.

Do a compression test and that will tell you what to do next.

As I originally stated to him rings seals compression test. Putting a video on YouTube might give an idea whether or not the rough running could be do to bad plugs / coils. He would have to be dumping volumes of oil through the cylinders to cause it to run badly.

It's probably running rough due to oil fouled spark plugs but that's irrelevant. The engine needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Any other parts that you buy/replace will be throwing more good money away.

Do a compression test first. A rebuild may not be needed. There are a few things that might cause oil consumption that don't need a rebuild to fix.

True. But to check it right he would need to do a compression test and a leak down test. And If you pull the heads for a valve Job you might as well rebuild it with the miles and oil pump history.

Also, he should be tracking down the oil burning issue before worrying about the rough running. He will probably find the cause of the rough running while tracking the oil issue.

The 5.4's that i had in my van and expedition were bad for burning oil. At about 140k miles both of them went from burning a quart every 5k miles to burning about 5-6 quarts every 5k miles. I put another 100k on each of them before i traded them in and never had any issues besides burning oil. Never any smoke, loss of power or fuel mileage. I just quit worrying about it.

Finally got around to getting a compression tester, I won’t have anybody to help me with this so where can I get one of those ignition bypass switches? And what do I connect it to?
