Just to reiterate what has already been said the Gov't here ordered similar units for the Dept of highways and the Forestry Service. Even seen bumps like this.back in the day.

Have seen several stepside crews and the were alm ex military. Even in the mid sixties the ones that were out there were also military or other govt agency owned.

The 3rd digit of the BODY code stamped on the Warranty Plate defines Flareside from Styleside beds.

I'm pretty sure I've seen government, and fleet, regular-cab F250s with the long Flareside bed. (140" wheelbase ) Highway construction, gas & electric utility company trucks, etc...
140" wheelbase only used with 1973/79 F350 Regular Cab Super Camper & Trailer Specials. These F350's have an 8' Styleside bed, but their Dana 70 is set back further, so the bed is unique.

The spare tire is located behind a door on the right quarter panel (bedside), just in front of the wheel.

8' Flareside beds will be found on F100/250's. 1953/72 F350's were available w/a 9' Flareside bed that was not available on F100/250's.

Flareside bed not listed for 1973/79 F350.

Geez that's a big flareside! Lol

Wonder why most govt trucks were flare sides? I see in the thread you linked someone mentioned flaresides being cheaper but it seems like they would be more expensive? Extra body lines as opposed to just straight side pieces but idk ???

Missing step?

Now that I am looking at truck, it seems the step foot piece is missing on flareside. Are those a separate plate of metal welded on, or was it a solid attached bent out. Hoping maybe I can find a metal fabricator/welder to form something in there. Thanks all for the reply's. I'm 45 and this is my first truck!

Yes they are separate pieces, that bolt on with 2 curved brackets. Any welding/fab shop should be able to make something that works and looks good too.

The US Gov't bought the cheapest possible trucks and Flaresides were cheaper than Stylesides.

Flaresides of this and previous eras have wood bed floors. Pine is cheaper than steel.

Ah didn't realize all those flare sides were wooden. Was wood an option and steel an option or were all flaresides wooden?

All the Flaresides used wood beds with steel dividers, steel was never an option.

And, the wood was painted body color originally, it was not varnished. Varnished wood does look nicer, but it isn't original.

There are several 9' F350 Flaresides & Stylesides pictured in the 1957/60 forum. 1957/66 F350 Stylesides also have a 9' bed.
