Have you figured out why the engine exploded in the first place?

We would not want to be recommending modifications or steps to increase HP when you have already made that mistake and are now paying for it.

Seems insane to replaced a failed non proven turbo with the exact same turbo and hope for a different out come....

As far as who to buy a shortblock from...... personally I would buy one directly from Ford because I like the warranty and the known quality.

I would likely get a long block but that is just me.

I'm not sure what the smog requirements are up there but down here they're pretty stringent.

Remember also that what passes this time around might not next time, even with the same shop. Lived that dream this year.

Looks like you in either an "enhanced" (what I have) or "partially enhanced" area (page 59): https://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/Smog_Chec...ence_Guide.pdf

Looking up a Vacaville zip code says that you are in an "enhanced" area (https://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/Z...ZipLookup.aspx).

Here's a link to the requirements if you are interested: https://www.bar.ca.gov/Industry/Smog...nce_Guide.html

New test manual last year that I did not know about: https://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/2017_Smog_Check_Manual.pdf

I would drop by a smog shop and ask them what the test in your area includes. They might tell you what they look for and possibly give you a free "pre-inspection".

I live in the OP’s area and not only is it enhanced area the state is on crack down to bust and close shops that are not 100% compliant. I know a local smog shop owner and he tells me they are sending in undercover cars monthly now just trying to find violations so they can close down the questionable shops. His techs don’t miss a trick.

Maybe because we are here in the state Capitol they expect things to run as they designed or maybe we are the test area for a wider roll out to come I don’t know but either way I don’t see anybody getting a 500hp truck to pass smog.

Just by looking at the machine tools and experience that Swamps has, that would have to be great place to get a short or long block from. Great reputation also. Of course, they are probably at the higher end dollar-wise.

yes, first the KC turbo bearings failed. So I had us towed to The closest Walmart parking lot. I had my son drive down w a stock rebuilt turbo, we swapped it but it had an internal oil leak, causing a run away.. and at 5k rpm it kicked a rod.

they sell motorcraft long long and short blocks but will also build you a motor,

not hard to drop 20k on a 500 hp worth longblock that still needs injectors, turbo, turning etc

Air shutoff before the turbo. Truck pullers have to have them usually. Kinda like the sewer valve for a camper. I think they have a spring to close them and a cable or something holds them open.

When I had my heavy truck my mechanic kept a thick phone book nearby to throw on the air intake, cutting the air off is the only way.

As mentioned earlier, I would have done everything possible to cut off the air supply to the turbo.
