Towing milage in a headwind

Just got back from a fishing trip hauling my 5000 lb camping trailer from Ventura Co. to Bridgeport Calif. 365 mi each way. Desert and mountians. On the trip up averaged 10 mpg. Comming back I averaged 7.5 to 8 mpg with a direct headwind pretty strong. was only driving about 60 to 65 mph. Does this sound normal. Never experienced such low milage while towing before. Had a sway bar and WDH. Experienced very little sway probably because I was heading into the wind and drove in 5 th gear most of the way. Appreciate any imput.

Yep, sounds normal to me. The EB is very happy to dump more fuel to keep speeds up.

Do you have concerns that something is broken or just surprised about the drop?

I was most concerned with my tow capacity and hp-torque that it would only go mainly in 5th gear.

Sounds right to me. About the same with my 13 EB Max tow with 3.73's especially in to a head wind. We love US 395. South of Lone Pine thru Inyokern is a little boring but I'll take that for what's north. Did you stop at Schotz Bakery in Bishop?

Mileage looks fine, I just averaged 7.2 mpg with my 2018 3.5 max tow on a 2600 mile round trip to Texas. I was right at 18k GCW so right at the upper limit. I was towing 11.5k and had the truck weighed down with about 1500 lbs in tractor parts and passengers. Roughly 11 tanks of gas set me back just shy of 1300.00. So I do believe your mileage is decent. What year is your truck?

Thanks for the reply. Did stop at Schotz, always do. Theres also one in mammoth. Spent 3mo. at Willow Springs RV in Bridgeport fished all over the area and caught tons of trout. 6 were over 5 lbs. Going back next year.

You were able to maintain 5th so that means the load wasn't too bad. I would say your mileage is still good.

You say 12k tow? That means you have a reg cab or 4x2 supercab correct? If that's correct then I possibly do think you should have gotten better. My truck is a CC 157" 4x4 which is heavier.

You would have been in double digits if you had held it to 55 MPH. Wind has a far greater effect than weight when towing.

Hi

Following this as I am thinking it is time to move on from my 2001 F250 4x4 Super Cab V10, I have a 23 Komfort travel trailer and fully loaded bed of stuff for camping including a Dirtbike. My mileage is around 7 at 65mph in CA. I was thinking of getting the F150 with 3.5l. But it does not sound like the mileage will be much if any better, am I reading this correctly.

my unloaded mileage is crap, like maybe 11.

You know that the statewide speed limit for vehicles towing trailers is 55 MPH. Right?
