Unless you accelerate hard up the hill, it just won't down shift and the motor is lugging big time.
Mine is a 2015 with the 6-speed, so this is not an apples-to-apples comparison. However, the "normal" mode seems to be optimized too much toward economy mode. We too have a lot of hills, and I have found that switching to tow/haul mode works much much better. So I will leave the tranny in normal mode until I come to one of our hilly stretches, and everything is copacetic.

I guess they took some of the economy out of the transmission with this update. It just may have been to aggressive towards economy. Since the update it does what a normal transmission would do. Now when I come to the hill (No need for Sport mode), it gets 1/2 way up and goes from 8th to 7th gear, then by the time I'm cresting it, it will go to 5th (Note RPM's are held above 1k at all times but never above 2k) the way it should of been.

My 2018 10 speed 5L V8 has been smooth as silk, I was surprised to hear some of the posts. But.... I made my trip from northern Michigan, to Florida, loaded up with some heavy stuff, and flat towing a 2002 Jeep.

I started out in tow/haul, but didn't like/need the long time between shifts, and the milage was terrible. Went to "Normal" mode, and for the first couple hundred miles through hills, the up and down shifting was clunky, and got my attention. But, that all went away.

The trip going through the mountains of KY, TN, NC, was very smooth shifting, I am very pleased.
My mileage average was 15.3, thats incredable for the load.

My last truck was a Duramax, I got rid of the travel trailer, and didn't need the diesel anymore, but was thinking that the gasser would struggle with the Jeep flat tow through the mountanins. It was a "no problem", plenty of power.

Ah man! You got the truck I wanted! Very nice setup, and glad to hear the towing and transmission is going well.
