85 L6 manual fuel/starting issues

If you are not getting fuel squirting right after you turn it off, the accelerator pump in the carb is bad/not working. What was throwing me off was you said it "drives fine". If it is not squirting fuel into the engine, it's not going to drive fine, you will have to baby the throttle slowing pressing on it to rev the engine. If you stab the throttle to the floor with the engine running it tries to quit correct?

Then you have another rubber hose from that same hard line to the tank.
Now if you have duel tanks you would have hoses at each tank and a few short ones at the tank switching valve.
You also have to make sure you are using the right size hose. I had a 3/8" hose on the suction side of the pump into a gas can to run the motor off of.
I could not get fuel up to the carb even with the can on the fender well and the hose clamp tight. Once I used 5/16" hose & clamp it started pumping fuel to the carb.
I did have 5/16" hose at the tanks & switching valve but I did not want to put fuel in the tanks yet as the truck will be sitting and did not want the fuel going bad.
I also changed the fuel pump because I was not getting fuel to the carb, pump sat for 2 years so it could have gone bad. All it was, was the 3/8" hose above.
That is why you need to check for fuel starting at the tank(s) and work forward.
If starting at the carb like you did, no squirt, you have to then work backwards to the tanks.
