6.9 black smoke at idle
hey guys, finally got my truck back together after pulling engine/trans and resealing and replacing some stuff.
it has a hard start, and usually won’t start without a little spray of starting fluid. Once it’s running, it runs real smooth, but blows a bunch of black smoke. I have done a lot of reading and attempted to adjust the timeing on the IP, with no real difference. It’s the pump I took off, and worked beautifully before the tear down. I have not driven it yet, as I have not bled brakes, or installed rear driveline (did 1 ton suspension and axle swaps while it was apart) what should I be checking or adjusting to make it not blo so much smoke? I did not touch the fuel screw.
thanks!

No, check the timing. You were re-sealing stuff, so you might be a tooth off or something. I'd pull the #1 glow plug, put a breaker bar on the engine and bar it over to 0 deg while feeling for air coming out of the GP hole.
You want to feel air coming out as you bar it over just before you hit 0. Stop at 0 once that happens(one rev you will feel nothing, the next you will feel it).
Now, pull the IP inspection plate off the front of the IP gear cover. The dowel pin should be at a 4-o-clock position and the opposite two bolts should be straight across(level with the horizon). Take a picture and post here.

When I had the motor apart, I aligned up all the timing marks before installing the front cover plate. So I knew it was at TDC. Then, I made sure the ‘Y’ on the IP gear was square off the IP housing, and the dowel was in the 4 o’clock position. I was pretty confident I got the gears in the correct place when I put it together. I found a local mechanic that has been working on idi’s for 20 years coming to time it for me Tuesday. I hope that helps, if not I’ll be back.
