Big green finally gets the love

Unless I get pretty heavy into machine shop work, it'll take a lot of go fast parts to get up to what I put into the powerstroke. Injectors for that sucker were 1300 by themselves... Add to that the RSK, HD trans, tuner, tunes, front axle, rear axle rebuild, etc etc....
The goal for the green truck is a turnkey fun truck that I can drive to church on the weekends or trailer to the mud park and tear up some trails. I don't want a restoration, just a solid, dependable truck. I don't plan to do anything to the exterior/interior of the truck at all... All my efforts will go into drivetrain and I'll be done.

My 79 f250 i bought when i was 16 in 1998 for $3000
4 different motors
3 transmissions
3 sets of axles
god knows how many driveshafts
203 doubler
new body after i rolled it
4-5 different suspensions setups
q78 buckshots, 37's, 39's and 44's
all sorts of isc like axle shafts, beadlocks, fuel systems etc
i dont even want to think about what i sold it for years later
Man i could almost buy a new f150 for how much $ i pissed into that truck
Its easy, but fun.. LOL

No the truck actually runs really great for the most part. Carb probably could use cleaning and tuning, and it smokes under load just a little out the passenger side. The reason I'm pulling the engine is mostly because the freeze plug on the driver's side behind the motor mount went bad, and it would be a pain to do in the truck. That's when the "while I'm in in theres" started. It leaks a little bit of oil out of the back of the intake manifold, and there is no telling when the water pump, oil pump, or fuel pump were changed.
Also, I go crazy if I don't have anything to tinker with, and winters get cold. I need something that will fit in my garage that I can play with!

The motor was marketed as a 390 when I bought the truck, but I never verified it. If it's not already a 390, it will be before i put the thing back in the truck.
Cam, etc is depending on how much the other stuff is going to cost me. I have my eyes on a kit that has valve springs, seals, lifters, etc from Summit that will be bought if the "budget" allows. Link: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-k33-222-3
I might go ahead and get it... We'll see.

I would shy away from comp cams, i personally have had two wipe a lobe, with break in additive and older high zinc motor oil.
plus if you do a search, alot of people are having troubles with wiping lobes, especially now with the reduced zinc and oil, and the new diesel API spec bringing the zinc content down to the same level as gas engine oil.
I love me a good healthy 390 , look forward to watching

Noted on the comp cam stuff. I might not even do the cam, depends on how it all looks when I pull it apart.
I might get the engine pulled this weekend. It's supposed to snow tonight so we will see what it feels like on Saturday. Good thing I finally got a heater for the garage!!
Side note: How many guys pull the engine and trans together? I have a 2 ton cherry picker and can pull the front clip if I need to.

Ok the engine is out and on the ground!! REmoval went well, no broken bolts or issues at all. The only thing we forgot to remove was the clutch linkage so something might have broken, I haven't investigated yet.
Here are the promised pictures:
Ready to begin...
The Before-I-take-it-apart-so-I-can-put-it-back-together-right Picture
Removing the Trans cross member was the hardest part of the whole process
And it's out! More leaks than I thought.... Glad I planned on resealing everything
The sad heartless shell.... Soon to have a nice, leak free heart for the next few years!
The whole process took three of us about 2 hours to get it out, from hood removal to when they were loading up. Not bad for the first time any of us had worked on these trucks this deep. I can't wait to get the engine on the stand and start the cleaning and working on this sucker!!

Thanks Byron!
The biggest issue I think we found was the fact that one of my headers is almost completely crushed. I knew it was going to need some love, but I don't know if love will get this thing back to where it needs to be.
I watched the engine masters so I know that headers can be dented within reason, but I think this is slightly beyond reason....
