Every now and then you can catch a good one from the house brand.
other then it has haunted me for the past decade
every time I have needed a part for the past 10 years I have been tempted to go to the zone..... luckily I know better and usually resist the convience.
I ran a DB starter for a couple of years (Denso "style", meaning "knockoff"). It only lasted a couple of years, so I went back with the rebuilt Mitsu I've now been running for over 5 years. I also have two additional true NipponDenso units on the shelf in the garage (bought from local rebuilder for about $190 each when I still had my diesel Excursion). It simply had not occurred to me to keep one in the truck as a handy spare, and I have room for it in one of my tool bags, so it's going into the bag tonight.
The Denso Corey (CNC Fabrication) sells is a genuine Denso. As mentioned before there are a lot of knockoffs out there that look identical to the Denso, but are far cheaper. Some work, some fail...
That said, I have my OEM starter in the garage and plan to have it rebuilt by a local shop this winter. I will keep it on hand in case the Denso ever dies on me.
This is just like most other decisions on parts that we face all the time. Do you go with the budget part that will probably fail soon, but might be OK for years or do you go with the premium part that will probably be OK for years, but could fail and you still paid more for it. Everything made by humans can and will fail eventually.
Ironically pulling my crap brand starter off today it does the whirrlilong sound every so often where it dosent engage the flywheel...the guys have everything set up for a warranty install date aug 7 this year. When this one goes out it’s going to get warranted and sold brand new to offset the price of a denso. I would do it right now but I’m purchasing a jet surf this week for a steal even had to advise my friend the terms he set for the sale were not the best for him lol
the way I see it the second you pay to put a budget part on and it fails you already paid to have it installed now your going to pay labor again plus time plus a possible tow. This far exceeds the price/pain of doing it once. I do the work my self but even then now the truck will be down I could be working from my boat on the computer but I’m replacing the starter and cleaning the engine.
i could use the same logic and say if I had to pay a shop to install parts on my Excursion it would be cheaper and More convenient to just buy a new vehicle that didn’t need the sort of maintaince as a 18 year old 7.3.
i don’t mind doing things if it must be done it must be done and to keep the cost down and reliability up another reason when I go in I usually increase my cost and replace “extra stuff” while I’m in there.Because its an older truck.
I hear all the time the best days are when you buy the boat and when you sell...I used to tell people yea Because you bought a P.O.S. Your fault because you bought a poorly constructed boat why is the 7.3 so popular it’s a beastt why is my Grady running strong 17 years old 1000’s of hours it’s built to last. Less than 10% of maintence money on that boat was spent on the hull the rest maintaing the engine. Just told a client last week SELL your 2016 bay/trashliner I’m not doing anymore work on it your going to screw your self over if you keep the boat as he’s crying to me but it’s a new boat.
I didn’t have the confidence w the 7.3 engine at the time when I had the starter initially installed so I’m paying for my choice. If it breaks again I’ll sell the new warranty one and flip it into a power play instead of a 4th loss since today I’m installing the 3rd starter. Thanks to the mechanic asking me why I don’t do my own work and this site it’s safe to say my truck is not going to a mechanic again! Cheers
I am flying to Seattle next week to look at a 4788, obviously I will have whatever I buy surveyed prior to purchase but do you have anything specific you dislike about the 4788 ?
I work on plenty of vessels pretty much all bayliners are built to a lower standard than most. It’s a budget boat line where you will spend plenty. A trained eye can see this in the details type of electrical wires, use of brass vs nickel on electrical buss panels, hardware used, smaller fuel tanks, less powerful bilge system, cheap generators, less system redundancy, cheaper lines for the head with ridges in them to hold your crap in the line instead of being smooth and plenty more little money saving tricks used to sell a new boat and than the used buyer on the back end spends a ton of $ on repairing later. (The best day was when I bought and sold it scenario) My Grady has all stainless steel hardware a comparable bayliner uses plastic which needs constant replacing or upgrading. You obviously want a cruiser style boat and a trained broker will tell you how great a bayliner is and how your family will love it etc....How easy can you access the engines for maitence is also another big one for that class. Sometimes a job is 4 hr on one w the same engine or 15-20 thousand because she needs dry dock and some. What’s the budget around 200? You can do much better for yourself than a Bayliner
