V10 Full Exhaust - NEW TRUCK
#31
Update from the last few days...
My mechanic got the header collectors tightened up better and corrected the exhaust leak. Ended up just needing to rotate the flange 180 deg. Anyone know why ford doesn’t use 3 pt flanges on these? Anyhoo, I digress. I soaked the dipstick tube that they screwed up with some PB blaster and got it out without much fight. Replaced with a new one from the dealer. The shop fixed the vacuum line they melted as well. All is well with the header install now. I’m very happy with it.
Onto the not so good news: regarding the rest of the exhaust, I’m throwing in the towel guys. I’m just going to return to the stock muffler and be satisfied with the JBA header install. These 3V V10s just DO NOT sound good with aftermarket exhaust under any load whatsoever. The drone is unbearable. I tried just the cherry bomb pro at first. Terrible drone. Added an 18” resonator In front of it, still the same drone just at different rpms. I’m done. I’ve read forum after forum with suggestions for these trucks and I’m just not in the place to keep throwing money at it, chasing a sound from a v8 out of a v10. The firing order just doesn’t allow for that sound. But, let me be clear, I LOVE this truck and motor.
When I was in high school I had a 98 Tacoma with a 3.4L v6. And like most high schoolers, I had to have exhaust put on. Well, the similarities in tone between the v10 and that old 3.4 v6 is uncanny. Some people may like it, but I’m 30 now with an infant and don’t want to subject him to high dB cab drone.
Stock muffler, here I come.

Sorry to hear that... I'm glad I wound up with the V8 for the sound. The other option is to make the truck so loud that you can't hear drone over the roar... that is why my 4 banger Ranger has a 8" long Cherry Bomb on it. I have been told it sounds like a mail truck And remember, they make baby hearing protection. Also, glad the dipstick tube was easy. I have heard horror stories...

I was worried about drone myself when putting an aftermarket muffler on. There have been very good reviews about Aeroturbine(Jones) 303XL's on the V10's. So I put one on mine. Sounds great, little to no drone(personal taste). I have a few chebby guys that I work with and they have commented that the truck sounds good. Even the wife is happy with it.

Ya'll ever make changes and immediately regret ever turning the first wrench?

Yes, but you have a 2V (based on signature) and the 3V versions in the 05-up are the problem children. I've heard a lot of the 2V clips and I like them. There's very few 3V clips out there and they all sound like garbage...like mine now.

I ended up with the Walker Quietflow SS which claims to be a direct OEM replacement. However it is much smaller. Sounds great though with slightly more throat than stock but zero drone. After throwing away a couple hundred dollars, I’m satisfied with where it’s at.
Unfortunately, I just did it the hard and long way around.

I definitely think the best sounding v10s I’ve heard (at least in videos) have been straight piped. But I’m almost certain the drone would be miserable. If you tru this, I would HIGHLY recommend installing a 24” resonator/glass pack. You won’t lose much noise but it should help with the drone significantly. Still might be bad, but good luck trying! After it’s all said and done, I wish I would’ve just left manifolds and all stock and just simply fixed the studs.

Interesting read/journey...
I myself am the Son of an Engineer and am a carbon copy of my Dad. I do my own work and check the work of others if I absolutely have no time and have to take it to a shop. So I understand you quite well, lol!
You rarely see the 2005-2007 trucks with a V10, I've always wanted to drive one, but you have a VERY beautiful and rare truck! May it bring you plenty of years and miles of trouble free service.
