Unhappy 2001 Ford e350 Over Drive switch not working

I have checked the wiring as far as even completely removing the harness and rewiring it and even just unplugging the switch from under the dash all together. Fuse #20 still blows even when disconnected. The wires looked perfectly fine when I pulled them but I redid them real nice anyways still with no luck. Tested the switch as well and it’s good. What else could it be? It’s obviously something happeneing before the switch.

Thanks so much. Leaving for a cross country trip in a few days with a trailer and need to have that switch working.

If it’s blowing the fuse it must be a short to power.

Does anyone have a diagram or know where else there would be a short besides the wires or switch? Only info I can find says change those and I’ve ruled those out completely.

It is in the wires, just not where you keep working on it. The problem is between the PCM and where you've unplugged the switch under the dash.

Did you check the wires all the way to the transmission? Could be a frayed wire down by the transmission or possibly a bad solenoid in the trans that is shorting out.

I followed the wires back pretty far but not back to the pcm. I’ll trace them back to the pcm and rewire that as well. If I replace the fuse after he van has sat it’ll last a little while before popping then everyone after will pop immediately figured I’d throw that out there as well.

Thanks again

The wires don't go to the transmission. And a bad solenoid can't cause this problem.

Does the truck still have overdrive or is it only using 3 gears?

It still has overdrive. I never drive it with overdrive though, because I play in a band and pull a huge trailer along with carrying 6 grown men all around the US and Canada. We hit some extreme mountains and the weight alone scares me driving with overdrive.

About to check the wiring to the PCM I guess. Again, can anyone help provide a schematic for this? Checked alldata pro with no luck, missing just the schematics I'd need. Surely one of you has a Service manual or any type of diagram for this?

I can take a photo of mine when I get home. I have a 1998 Econoline WSM hard copy.

That would be amazing. I will be purchasing one soon, just figured alldata would suffice (have an account through my work) but sure enough its missing half the diagrams for these vans.

Thanks 98

I really apologize. I looked yesterday and cannot seem to locate my hard manuals. I will keep looking.

So, after messing with this more I figured out a few things. The fuse only blows once the switch is pushed, if the van is still running it’ll continue to blow them even if I disconnect the switch like said before but if I shut the van off and then replace the fuse it won’t blow until the switch is pushed again. I noticed the “ground” wire has a small reading jumping from .05-.10 volts is that common? Also I realized the switch is basically just touching two positives to send a signal to the transmission and he ground is solely for the light. So I flipped the switch so that the ground wouldn’t be hooked up at all but when pressed the two positives would still touch and guess what... it worked... drove around all day in 3rd gear and never blew the fuse. So now my big question is, do you think this is related to the ground or the switch? I’ve tested every part of the switch that I can think of. The resistor in the switch is reading what it should (820 Ohms) and I’ve tested that the LED works.

If it is the ground. Could I get away with just wiring a new ground?

Sorry for the mouthful trying to be as transparent about it all as possible.

Well after driving it around all day, the fuse eventually blew. Lasted a solid 5/6 hours. At a loss at this point. Both the power from the PCM and power from the Fuse box read around 13.8 volts and the other (not sure if it’s a pcm ground or super low voltage power) is jumping from .05 to .10 volts and these readings are with the switch unplugged at the point they connect under the dash. When bypassing that last wire (low voltage/ground thing) I was able to get around most of the day, but then out of no where I was back in overdrive.

Again, any help would be appreciated.
