86 460 rebuild questions
Hi all, ive got a 86 ford f250 with a 460ci, im looking into rebuilding the engine as it needs valve guide seals and a timing cover gasket. I figured while i have it apart might as well rebuild it all since im not sure of the history of it. Rig will be used for mild towing, 3 to 4 horse trailers and smaller 5th wheels, and as a daily since i live close to work, i want to wake up this old beast and get more torque and hp but have found minimal forums on if i should keep stock heads or go with a different type. And i have heard flat head pistons are the way to go for better compression. Will be having machine shop do the long block and i will be putting the rest together. Going to be using duel plane edelbrock intake and a edelbrock carb. Oh and im up here in oregon so slight off road use in the winter as well. Been trying to find a 5 speed out of a late 80s f250 to help with highway speeds. Any suggestions on the build is greatly appreciated.

Those wake right up with a little bit of compression, like the 94< pistons, probably cheap too. a set of decent to good headers, some intake upgrades, and a straight up timing set, and curve the ignition system for a useful timing curve, a split pattern cam, like a crower 22170 or a crower 22239 or a comp 256, and I would shoot for not more than 9.5:1 CR and probably closer to 9.0:1 for towing. That should develop enough of a power plant to really scoot over those mountain passes.
