Diesel fuel and/or diesel fuel additives such as cetane booster will turn DEF into a milky color. If it gets pumped through the system, the pick up, pump and line will need to be replaced. Like already mentioned above, this mistake is far less costly than putting DEF or gasoline into the diesel tank.

I had a questionable experience with DEF post-dealer visit. I was on the verge of a cross-country trip and didn't want to take any chances so I drained the DEF tank. I researched how to do it and there is no drain valve or other way of getting in/out of the tank other than the fill port and the pump in to the DOC.
How I did it was with a long hose and shop air. I put a bucket on the ground under the fill ports, ran my hose in (3/8" poly or so - the white opaque kind - I had to cut a taper in one end to get it through the maze of tubing in to the tank) then I put a shop towel around an air gun nozzle at the fill port. I shot air in to the fill port to pressurize the system and push the fluid in to the hose. Once the siphon action started it went by itself until the fluid level dropped below the hose opening down in the tank.
I got pretty close to the 5 gallons expected out of it. I had a 2.5 gal jug of blue DEF to refill with.
I still am wanting to get that batch of DEF that I drained out tested some how to see if it is good or not. Any ideas on how to do that?
In any event, the method I did certainly did NOT drain the whole tank. It got the majority out, but without knowing how low the siphon hose was down in the tank it's anyone's guess how much was left in there. Whatever was there was certainly very well diluted when I got fresh DEF in it.

Dropped the DEF tank today. I used Steve's advice on siphoning the tank. In the process of disconnecting all the wire connections and the tubing from the DEF pump I broke the barb the discharge hose goes on. $400 for a new pump. Pick up new pump from dealer tomorrow and finish job. The hose connection is very flimsy. The tank is all clean and ready for the pump. I'll post a picture of what I broke later.

The bad part about them is the plungers inside glue themselves shut once the fuel dries. I opened mine from last year this summer and got the plunger free with a bit of 2 stroke oil. I didn't have much luck with getting it to pull a vacuum afterwards though so I got a new one out.
