From previous comments some how you need to open the bypass in filter. How do you get the bypass to stay open when changing the filter?
I have changed my oil five times same results no matter how many holes I have punched in filter a mess.
Thanks
Was the engine and oil Hot?

I change my oil hot and puch the awl in until it hits the handle about 1 to 1.5 inches from the edge of the filter and don't have a mess. I had a mess one time, which was the one time I changed the oil while it was cold. I also may have punched the hole more towards the center and didn't go deep enough.

In 30 yrs of changing my own oil and filter I've never punched the oil filter. My first oil change on my F250 should be interesting.

Just use a gallon water jug/,milk jug. after a few turns then place it under the filer and unscrew it. No mess. No fuss.

This thread is exactly why I miss the paper filter oil changes of the 6.0L Powerstroke. That was so easy. I was disappointed when I went to do my first oil change on the 6.7L. I also have the 2011 with the plastic oil pan that needs to be changed out so I can add the valve.

Except that the filter is still covered in oil. To me, THAT is the messy part.

For my last oil change, the first I did myself, I had on rubber gloves, put the drain pan under the filter housing, pulled the filter off and dropped the mess into the drain pan. Done.

That's how I've change oil filters. I just don't see the issue here.

Any one using a "fumoto" drain on a 2011 diesel? It looks like they don't make it for that year. Do you suppose it is because of the plastic drain pan?

The people I've seen using them on a 2011 have swapped to the metal oil pan so they can install. It's only like $25-35 for the pan (I think) so you'd just have to make the effort.

Yeah, those 6 pack single serve wines do pretty well.
I like a nice Cabernet to go with my 15w40.
Cordless drill, 1/4 inch hole in the bottom of the filter helps.

When you drop the filter, about another quart of oil will come out that was in, I'd guess the upper part of the engine, and end up all over the place.
Crack the filter, let it drain. Then remove the filter. you will still get about a quart of oil making a mess since the drain back valve stops it from draining.

I have never seen this much oil come out, above and beyond what the filter holds, of any engine except this one.

I punch a hole in the bottom straight up, let that drain until it stops. Then I can remove the filter without a bath. Anything else results in an oil spill....

This is getting to be like an argument between pro gun folks and the Anti gunners. If you agree with our God given right to carry, then carry. If you don't believe in defending yourself, then DON'T. But don't force your views on me.

Back to the point: If you want to pre drain the oil filter, do it. And then have to wait for it to drain out.

If you don't do that like me, put a newspaper under the drain pan, have on rubber gloves, loosen up the oil filter and try to carefully take it off to drop it in the oil pan.

One way is longer and cleaner. The other way is faster and dirtier.

It's your truck, your oil, your driveway or garage floor, you decide.

Yeah, but if you don't use the right KIND of gloves the muffler bearings will explode the very next time you try to start your engine!!!
