Is there a 5-Speed Transmissio for 56 F-250?

I've got a 56 F-250 with 4-speed including compound low, and 456 rear end gears, and top speed of about 50 mph flat out. I've been researching the option of changing out the rear end to a 373 or 356, and a suggestion was made of going to a 5-speed, to get a freeway gear. I apologize if I'm overlooking a previous answer to this question in this forum, and ask whether Anybody has information on this subject?

I assume you have a Y Block V8? Going to a T5 is fairly easy. Most of those have what would still be a very short 1st gear, and often a .63 5th, but also many of them are very light duty, and even the stoutest one is ~330 ft. lbs rating. There are a couple of companies that go through them and beef them up to (?), not sure, but much more than stock for a price of course.

I don't know about other, heavier truck transmissions aka ZF. And, there's always the stand alone overdrive solution behind your transmission in the truck now. Here's a FTF thread on some of the options:

You might also call someone like Modern Driveline: TREMEC 5-speed 6-speed Transmission Conversion solutions for classic and modern muscle

Hey, we all were at one time. Many questions you may have were probably already answered here sometime before. There are different ways to search, but even if you do a google for "Y block to 5 speed" or similar, it often leads back to a FTF link. Lots of knowledge here with many of the members. Good luck!

F250Owner, welcome to FTE the best Ford truck Forum on the world wide web! I don't have an answer to your question but I am interested as I have 55 F350 with a 5.83 rear end.

In the mean time show us some pictures of your truck and it's history if you know it.

Welcome to FTE! An NV4500 might be an option.
