What Scanner for under $200

My 60th birthday is coming up in 8 days and the family is pressuring me for gift ideas. I told them that I was happy if they just came by for the day, but they have ganged up on me.

One idea I thought of is a new scanner. Mine has to be at least 15 years old. I have no idea what is good or bad in the market today. I don't want to break the bank on them, so I fugured maybe sub $200 would do it.

Any Ideas? The more features the better and ABS bleed would be real nice.

Look into the handhelds by Autel or Launch. Packed with features at a great price. Your local NAPA carries them.

I would go with Forscan, the most functional scanner available under a grand. The program is free, I wouldn't waste my money these days on a scanner. Most of my techs use the Torque Pro from their phone or tablet, total cost with app and adapter is under 40.00.

Forscan is great but I don't think it does ABS brake bleeds (yet!). I use both Forscan and a cheap ABS bleed tool. Stewart had a great recommendation on the ABS tool....

i have forscan on a laptop and a usb obd for in depth scanning, hte usb obd was $30 on amazon. For general monitoring/scanning bluetooth dongle and samsung galaxy tab 2, $7 and $40 respectively. It's the perfect solution for easy stuff.

It does ABS bleeding on all the newer can bus vehicles. Wasn't aware it didn't work on the older vehicles.

I have a Lemur Monitors BlueDriver and really like it. It's Bluetooth OBD scanning tool. Simple to use and has helped me diagnose several issues and clear codes. Can also perform some real-time monitoring, but probably not as much as a laptop-based system. I don't know for sure, this is all I've ever had, or needed. This is solely a reader and code clear device, you can't communicate back to the computer with this, if that's what you're looking for.

I am glad this came up again, I did the research a few weeks ago but then left on vacation so now I need to buy.

Forscan offers several diffrent level of program for use on various devices but if you want to have the same functionality as the Ford dealer with access to every module and be able to program and do service functions them you need a windows 2000/xp/7 based laptop and a USB to OBD connector that has the proper protocols.

Forscan lite for android works with a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and is basically a scanner

forscan for iOS works with a specific WiFi OBD2 adapter and is also just a scanner.

forscan feature chart and the Ford Modules you can interface with. basically all of them however I do not see the APCM module and have sent an email to Forscan asking about it.

The under $200 bucks criteria......

Forscan full featured software = free
Used Windows 7 computer = $55
OBDLink SX USB =$35

All in for $90 bucks including shipping for the same tool set mechanics at Ford pay over $3000 to acquire

All mentioned are good options.

i use torquepro with my phone a lot. Works great for real time readings, wifi connector was like $20-30 and the app is free.

i have a launch x431 also, mostly for the airbag system access. Depending on which one they go for $120 - 900. I have a model that does most everything but key programming.

Thanks, everyone, Great suggestions, and I really appreciate your time on this.

I gave suggestions for these in order of desire:

OBDLink Mx Bluetooth
Autel Maxicheck pro
Autel Maxisys pro

Now, after all this, I'll probably end up getting a sweater and a tie.

But hugs and kisses are worth far more. The only present I really want from my family is their presence.
