v 10 timming chain cover

My son went to move his truck sat and it barely ran. It's a 99 f350 v10 with 400,000 mile's. We started to change the cps and it broke off in timing chain cover . 3 hrs. latter trying everything to get it out a piece broke off and fell into cover. So now he is removing timing chain cover to get it out while cover is off what kind of pm should b done ? Replace timing chain gears or just do guides and tensioners?

I'd be willing to bet the chain is stretched enough that the tensioners are maxed out or close to it. But then, it's got 400,000 miles on it, so is it worth doing anything to it?

Would like to keep it running long enough so he could save for a new rebuilt . He just got a job as a diesel mech 21 years old . My other son just got out of school . I'm a single parent and paying for cars on a carpenters salary is getting old.

See how bad the chain guides are worn, and how far out the tensioners are. Can't really say how much is "too much" though.

You can buy a timing set on Rockauto without sprockets for ~$125 or with sprockets for ~$250. Since you have 400k on the engine and you really don't want to buy something else, $125/$250 is not too much to pay to replace something that is no doubt at its wear limit - cheaper than a rebuilt or new truck. If it were me I would do the complete replacement (but I tend to go overboard with while you are in there...)

Just my .02
