Converting to A/C is difficult, you do not have enough holes in the firewall. You need to find a truck that does not have A/C and get the parts from that. If you want A/C, sometimes you can find a factory non-A/C truck that has had a dealer A/C add-on. That would not be too bad to add to your system to convert to A/C.

I don't know if I would go pass 86. There was talk of the later year trucks that they made the firewall the same between AC and non-AC firewalls but it was not said what all was changed.
Did they use the old AC firewall and changed the non-AC box to fit OR did they change everything, both boxes and firewall?
In short I don't have an answer to your question.

Stay with the 86-down trucks. I am going to guess they changed the setup in 87 when they changed everything else, but that is a guess. What they did was eliminate the oddball non-A/C setup that you have now in the later trucks. The later trucks were all A/C style firewall, they just changed the housing under the hood and added the A/C coil and other stuff if the truck came with A/C.
In other words, your heater core is out under the hood, you have a 86-dwn non-A/C truck. 86-down A/C trucks have the heater core behind the glove box. Starting in 87ish, all heater cores were located behind the glove box, A/C and non A/C.
If someone has a 86-dwn A/C truck, and do not have a working A/C and do not want the A/C and want to eliminate that large housing sticking out beside the pass side valve cover, they can go find a 87-up non A/C truck and get the non-A/C housing off it. Take there housing out from under the hood, along with the A/C coil, and install this later non-A/C housing and have more room under the hood. I have never tried this, but I think it would work.
