My brother has a 96 Bronco with a 351W and I guess what is an E40D, I thought the C6 had evolved into other things by this time (E40D being one of them) but that stuff blurs together in my mind after a while, there are only so many details like this I can recall.

EDIT: I would still consider yours to be a one-off, though, that combination in that year just sounds too odd to me.

I bet if you were to check with a rebuilder and tell them the motor that C6 bolts to you will find that the case is the same be it 4x2 or 4x4.
The difference is all in the different out put shafts use be it a 4x2 or 4x4.

I would also like to know why that broke like that. I have seen a lot of plow trucks and never seen that happen.
Did the TC adaptor come lose at the back of the trany to cause that?
Racing off road, read jumping the truck, I have seen the TC adaptors break because the front drive shaft bottomed out (to long), pushed back into the adaptor braking it.

I have no idea how it broke. Was leaking forever, and when I went to pull the trans, that's what i found. The other side is broke too. Only thing holding it in was one of the pump bolts.
