What is a Wastegate?

Something I read about all over this forum is something called a wastegate. What is a wastegate and what does it do? After reading a catalog from Bullydog, I know it has something to do with the Turbo. Getting more boost out of the turbo and lowering the EGTs. Is any of this true? What is the wastegate and what does it do?

What is a Wastegate?

In layman's terms, a wastegate is a pressure relief valve. In effect, when the boost level gets high enough, it will vent pressure to avoid damaging the engine.

Although your explaination gives an idea of what a wastegate is, I still don't understand. On another note, why close the wastegate? I've heard of so many people doing it, but I don't understand why you would do such a thing if it's supposed to be a pressure relief valve.

It seems like, you would not want to modify the wastegate without a Pre-Turbo gauge to prevent damage. If you are controlling the boost level this way, I would bet, you would not want to modify the wastegate unitl after your warranty expires.
