8th gen or 9th gen

8th gen or 9th gen
I'm having a dilemma and need to ask the experts. I'm lookin to get back into another OBS (thank god) and I'm stuck between 2 identical trucks one year apart. a 1991 and 1992, CCLB 460 4x4 auto's. now ive had to 460's before, one 1994 and one 1995, both ran great and had plenty of power. love the looks of them as well. i know the differences on paper between these two trucks but am wondering if there is any real seat of the pants feel between the 1991 460 and the 1992. i know they will both be OBD1 but ford states a power and torque increase from 91-92. about 15 more each way.
the 92 is better looking, the 91 has a kingpin axle which is important for me base on what i want to do with it. i know gas mileage with suck with both and i don't care. the 1992 is more expensive and has less miles, i think the 91 was a service truck and probably has a ton. i know the dashboards and interiors are different but don't know if one is better than the other. that's not a big deal to me either, really mainly curious about the engines compared to one another. anybody that's ran both have any input? thanks

Honestly Im somewhat bias at this point in time, however having owned both I really enjoy my 91 much better than the 94 that I used to own.
In my opinion the interior and exterior have much more personality on the 8th gen. Both trucks were in beautiful condition and I've got so many more compliments on the 8th than I ever did on the 9th. They were both single cab short bed 2 wheel drives.
I did think that the 9th's bench seat was more comfortable but always thought the 9th's interior was dull and boring.
I used to think the 9th exterior was better looking until the 8th's grew on me. Now I wouldn't trade my 8th for the 9th for anything.
Good luck with your pick. Either way you go, you can't go wrong.
P.S. Keep in mind, the aftermarket world is much more abondant for the 9th's as well.

It is all in the looks
SAME engine, trans,t-case and axles(other than king pins/ball joints)
It depends where you look for hp/tq specs but I KNOW the 97s are 245hp/400tq
I have seen claims of 280hp? and 390tq for the 88
But in all reality the 88-92 are identical.
The changed happened in 93 with a little different valves and pistons but it was nothing drastic

With the 8th gen, there doesn't seem to be much compromise,it's a love it or hate it style.I've never cared for it myself but when the 9th gen came out,I always really like the style.I think the 9th gen isn't just better looking than the 8th gen but better looking than a lot of other generations as well.
I think if your ok with the 8th gen styling and the truck is a better deal, you should go with that though.Saving money is always wise.

I like the nose on my 95 better than my old 89. Both being 5.0 5 speed trucks with 3.55 gear. The bench was more comfortable in the 89 and I liked the HVAC controls better in the 89. But the 95 is 4 wheel drive which is a huge plus for me. The 95 has a LITTLE more umph because of the better camshaft but at highway speeds there's no difference.
I think ford should have upgraded the front end but left the interior the same on the 9th gens.

I am biased owning a 9th gen, but the 9th gen F Series is the best looking truck Ford ever made IMO, and I've thought that since I was a kid. The 8th gens are good looking too, but I like the 92-96 trucks a little more than the 8th gen bricknose trucks.
The 8th gen interior is a huge improvement over the previous generation, but I like the 92-96 interior slightly more than the 87-91. I think it looks just a bit more modern. But it's nothing to write home about, there is hard plastic everywhere and the plastics squeak and creak in every one I've ever rode in.

Go all the way around the upper and lower bolts of the dash,up by the windshield along with down by the ash try level and across and snug up all the black head bolts you see.You should then have a quiet cab. These should of had a drop of thread lock on them from the factory.Take them right out and apply a little if you want but a snugging should last for a few years. It will make a world of difference. You'll see.
