Fuel tanks, 85-86 vs 87-89

What's the difference between fuel/gas tanks for 85-86 and 87-89? Here's a list of part numbers for a gas engined 133" WB, 2WD standard cab F250:

Midship tank:
80-84 E3TZ-9002-M 19 gallon, 2.5" opening
85-86 E5TZ-9002-L 19 gallon, 4" opening
87-89 E9TZ-9002-B 19 gallon
90-95 F0TZ-9002-E r/b F6TZ-9002-N 19 gallon
96-97 F6TZ-9002-N 19 gallon

Aft tank:
80-84 E0TZ-9002-D 19 gallon
85-86 E5TZ-9002-E 19 gallon
87-89 E7TZ-9002-A 19 gallon
90-92 F0TZ-9002-B r/b F3TZ-9002-A 18 gallon
93-95 F3TZ-9002-A r/b F6TZ-9002-A 18 gallon
96-97 F6TZ-9002-A 18 gallon

I've compared 82, 86, and 89 midship tanks in a wrecking yard. The 89 was from a truck produced in August, ie an 89 and 11/12ths. The tanks appeared identical except that the early one had the small fuel pickup/gauge hole, and the later ones had a bigger hole to fit a fuel pump. I couldn't see any difference at all between the 86 and 89, yet the 89 takes a different part number. Perhaps 89's used the earlier tank in production, with only replacements being of a new design. Note the "E9" (==1989) part number. Interestingly, aftermarket tanks have the exact same year demarcations.

I'm collecting parts for an EFI swap and need to figure out which tank(s) to get.

the older tanks used and in tank low pressure supply pump and an external high pressure pump. The newer setup was a single in tank high pressure pump.

Fuel tanks, 85-86 vs 87-89

I don't know if this will help you at all but I just put a front fuel tank out of an 86 f150 supercab two wheel drive into an 82 F250 reg cab 4x4. Both trucks have long boxes. I didn't even think about the holes for the sending unit and such so when I got the wrecked tank out I just scrapped the whole thing and put the sending unit, and fuel pump all in with the new tank and so far no problems at all.

Hope this helps

Fuel tanks, 85-86 vs 87-89

John: The years in question use a frame mounted high pressure pump and an in-tank low pressure pump (for EFI engines) - so that's not the difference.

What I'm wondering about are differences in the galvanized steel portion of the tank. In other words, why do JC Whitney & American Designers have different tanks for 85-86 vs 87-89? I could chalk up Ford's multiple part numbers to different coatings, different gauge steel, different vendor, or etc. For the aftermarket to have multiple versions means that something isn't interchangeable. A different body style started in 87, so I compared tank shapes in case the truck frame is different, but couldn't find a difference. I know that the fuel gauge sender resistance changed in 87, but that shouldn't affect the tank. Perhaps the filler hose nipples are different?

Fordman: Did you have any trouble hooking up the 82 filler to the 86 tank?

Thanks
Ludis

I think they are for empty/bare tanks. The senders/pumps have "9275" part numbers. However, the "9002" number is called "Fuel Tank Assembly" in a 1970's parts list. (I would have to go to a library to check if newer parts lists still call them assemblies.)

Through 84, they were all carbureted, and had the small tank opening. In 85, the opening size was increased, presumably to fit the fuel pump for fuel injection. However, even carbureted applications switched to the bigger sender. The 86 tank I compared (in the first message) was from a carbureted 351W and of course it had the big sender.

I went to a full service wrecking yard where they don't punch holes in fuel tanks, and bought a midship tank. I don't yet know what year it is - I still have to look for and check part numbers. Hopefully an 86 EFI sender will work in it, that's the year I might have to use.

The only problem was that it was very short so there is not much room to get your hand in. It fits with a little swearing but it takes a while to get it on.

If you are at any point gonna take your box off then is the time to do it, trust me!

Have a 1987 F250 4x4 long bed 460 dual tank pickup. It had an engine mounted pump, no catalytic converter but a high heat pump dual fuel rated. Upgrading to Holley Stealth EFI. 1. Can I fit a 1988 EFI tank either location? 2. Will an EFI in tank stock pump work for the Stealth? it needs like 85 for pressure. Martin
