2002 7.3l 4r100 transmission - 9 check ***** wtf?

I'm in the process of overhauling a used 4r100 for my 4wd conversion. The ATSG manual says I should have 8 check ***** under the the valve body gasket. I have found 9 check ***** as shown below.

The extra ball is the furthest to the right in the pictures below. I think the ball of interest should not be there as I do not see any way it could seat itself in either the transmission case hydraulic channels or on the metal valve body gasket. The opening between the bottom channel into the little triangular channel is to wide for the ball to completely block flow.

Not sure what to do here. All the research I've seen only accounts for 8 check *****.

Anyone have any input on this?

No ball there, the earlier E4OD transmission would have a ball there and a plate to match, probably somebody has been it this transmission before, I find all kinds of crazy stuff that people do inside transmissions.

So follow the book and you will be fine.

Thank you for the help!

This trans is marked as remanufactured on the side. Now this has me wondering what all is wrong inside the case...
