05 f250 brake controller

I’m having some trouble with my brake controller, ever since I bought the truck I’ve had problems with the brake controller check trailer light coming on and off pretty frequently even when I’m not towing anything. It seems to say check trailer everytime I go over a bump.

last weekend I hooked up a trailer and I had to disconnected the brake wire on the trailer harness because the controller kept saying check trailer and the brakes were locking up. Any ideas on what it could be? A short behind the controller in the dash maybe?

It's the controller. I went through that with mine. The solder joints have come lose on the board. If your good with a soldering gun go for it. If not send it to circut medics.

Okay so I fixed the solder joint that was bad and now the check trailer light doesn’t come on randomly or when I go over a bump. So that’s fixed but I couldn’t get power to the terminal on the back of the truck for the brakes

I had a similar problem. Either send it to Ed at Ficmrepair or buy a new one on eBay. They come up periodically for around $200.

How much does it cost to send it to Ed? Or would it just be worth it for me to go to a junkyard and pull one?

I think it's $99 not including shipping.

As far as pulling from a junk it's hit or miss if it's good or bad. I chose to buy a new one on eBay for around $175. This was before Ed started providing brake controller repair services. I just didn't want to have to think about it down the road if the unit would work or not. Good luck.

Depending on the software version you will NOT have voltage at the electric brake plug unless the truck is moving over 15 mph +. Hook a trailer to it and retest st 30 mph and feel for the brakes grabbing.

If you have Forscan you can monitor the TBC for inputs and outputs. Here's a screen shot.

I wasn’t getting power to the running lights either so unless you have to be going 15 mph for it to get power to the running lights as well, then I have a problem. I’m not totally sure on this but is the check trailer light supposed to go on if I apply the brakes on the brake controller and I don’t have a trailer hooked up?

I would take a closer look at the harness and plug. If you lose continuity with the electric trailer brakes or lose ground it will give you the check trailer message. If you have no parking lights at the plug then you have a harness or a plug issue. Unplug the harness at the back of the 7way plug and inspect it. Then further up the harness is another plug, check it. There is also a ground wire to the chassis, make sure its attached. Of course check fuses first.
