1954 F-250 Brakes and King Pins.

Hello Everyone,

im going to be doing a brake job, king pins, and tie rods and tie rod tube on my F-250. Any advice from experience? Any idea if the F-250 master cylinder is the same as a F100?

the brakes are from NAPA and the king pins and tie rod ends and tube are from Dennis Carpenter.

where can I get a brake hardware kit?

Thanks,
Chris

When replacing the kingpins, are the bushings sized to the kingpin or should they be honed to match?

thanks,
Chris

Thank you for the numbers, that’s a big help. I have a master that came with the truck, now I can see if it’s the right one.

Yes, you will need to have the bushings honed or reamed to fit the new pins. You should also check the fit of the pins in the axle. You can buy oversize king pin sets if the axle is worn.

Thanks, what’s the best way to check the king pin fit to the axle? Should I reinstall the kingpin after disassembly and make sure it’s snug?

Clean the old king pin and the axle hole. The center of the pin that was in the axle should be tight in the axle, IE, you should have to lightly tap it with a hammer to move it in the axle.

I suspect this is why my truck was all over the road.

on another note - the standard size king pins I got are loose in my axle. What are my options if the over sized kingpins are still too loose?

thanks,
Chris

The axle can be sleeved, if you can find a machine shop that will do it, or replace the axle. Replacing the axle would be the cheaper route to go. Your axle may have oversize pins installed in it already. Measure the pins and compare them to the new ones to find out what you have.

Thanks Mark!

Any thoughts on the best place to look for a good axle?

Yes, your axle is toast. You should have to tap the pin in the axle with a block of wood or a dead blow hammer.

Thanks for looking.

I got oversized king pins, they seem a little tight, at least on the one side. I might try to see if a machine shop can hone the axle to fit the oversized pins.
