There's a significant difference between the 2008 and 2009 trucks. For starters the cab grew. Different trans, more goodies and tech were added.
The 2015 is a ground up rebuild of the 2009-2014 trucks. The door skins look the same. The 2015 trucks have a shallower but wider bed and body to accommodate the Superduty. The frame is made from difference alloys, improved engines, 10 speed trans and even more tech and goodies.
The 1980 - 1996 trucks plus the 1997 Heritage all share the same bones. The entire run used the same engines but EFI was added in the mid 80's. With the 1987 model, the transmissions were changed from the M4OD to the M5OD and from the 3 speed auto to the E4OD.
The F-series trucks are evolving faster now than ever before.

Internally, I agree Ford F-150 is evolving faster, but the thread was mostly about appearance which I am pretty sure nobody cares about as long as Ford keeps it smart-looking. Look at the sales between 2014 and 2015, the completely redesigned truck had 780,354 while the previous generation 2014 had 753,851.
Despite the aluminum body being such a big leap, it was a small number sales-wise. We all can agree the Ford F-150 is a smart-looking pick-up, it always has been (except when they tried to make it swoopy like the Taurus between 1997-2003, the shortest-lived style).
Customers want something big and comfortable. Internals such as the motor enhancements or the Android Auto (my reason for trading in my 2012) or the trailer back-up assist do make it much more desirable. Other makers rely on looks while Ford seems to give it less priority and that's perfectly fine with me.
If Ford updated the appearance more frequently, I feel it would hit the resale value. I don't want that.
