My $500 59

Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a while, but haven't posted anything yet. Figured I'd throw it out there.

Back in April, wife approved of me getting a project car. Found this that afternoon, liked it, bought it. Had it towed home.

It's a 1959 Ford F100 Styleside Shortbed. It does not have a drive train. Originally had a 223, which ran when PO bought it. He yanked it and started going full Dr. Frankenstein on it. So this could be Frankenstein's Monster, I suppose. Color scheme definitely fits that. Am currently planning to purchase 2000-2007 Police Interceptor and swap the drivetrain from that. Had a 51 Ford Longbed in high school and a string of import cars since then, so this is kind of a homecoming. My dad drives a restored 63 Ford F100 Shortbed and my brother has a couple of classic Chevys (52 Pickup and 56 Bel-Air).

Thanks, dcmania.

I got some high hopes for it, I bought a 1960 longbed for parts and have been tearing it down saving things I notice aren't in good shape on the '59. I grew up in the high desert of Idaho, pretty dry and easy on cars. The Pacific NW is harsh, and these trucks seem to have a predisposition to rust. I rarely see them on the road around here, compared to the earlier 50s and later 60s that is, so I kind of jumped at it. I would put a 223 back in it, seeing as I got one in the parts truck I bought, but my brother has a 350 crate motor in his Chevy and I want to give him a run for his money.

Bought a new mig welder and some sheet steel to start practicing with patch panels. It has spots of rust here and there, but the guy I bought it from gave me a cardboard box full of parts he had bought and never used so that was cool. The PO was prepping it to drop in a Big Block Chevy, I saved it from that, but not before he swapped the front subframe and suspension from a '79 Camaro Z28... and it rides low. Real low. So it's a bit of a basket case. I am going to focus on the aesthetics for now and get it looked right and then I'll push it out of the way and bring in a donor car.

Also I have no idea what I'm doing. I haven't done bodywork or paint in over 15 years. So this is going to be fun times.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'm not going as wild as you, that '57 you're building is gonna be unreal. I think the 250ish horse off of a mid-2000s mod motor is going to be overkill in this thing already. It's sooo light.

Thanks, I used to lurk more under a different username back a few years ago when I was gifted an old 1984 F250 work pickup, mostly trying to figure out why it was running so horribly all the time, so being here from a hobbyist perspective is a nice change of pace.

Managed to sell a few parts off of the parts pickup too, so I'm halfway to recouping the cost of buying it. If anyone needs anything, it's a 1960 longbed. About to head to Idaho for vacation and I am going to try and hit a few old junkyards while I'm down there for fun. May upload a few pictures if I see anything interesting. Have a good week guys, we've made it to hump day.

Dang, guys. I think I may have hosed myself. A guy offered to buy the emblems off the 1960 hood, I threw out $75 without looking them up or anything. I've seen emblems go for around 25-35 a piece on ebay... then I looked when I got home and the ones for our years go for so much frickin money... I feel like I need to apologize but say I need more for them. I feel like such a tool for it. I just don't want to be a dick and back out of the deal or try to sell em out from under the guy. I'm such a fool. I'm not selling the parts to get rich, just to get some of my money back out of it, I guess if it was reversed I'd be frickin' jacked to find a set of emblems for so cheap. I'll have to be content to be the facilitator and hope it comes back around in the future, haha.

Any of you ever done that? He seems like a straight up guy, and he's buying some other parts. I'll probably just give in and take it... In other news if anyone has any hood badges for the 59, I need them. And apparently I'll have to take a home equity line of credit to buy them off of ebay.

Just tell the guy you had a change of heart. He may get PO'ed but he'll get over it. Besides you may decide to use them...Pat
