2017 Ford F250 Lariat Ultimate 6.7 PSD Extreme MPG Challenge

Hey Guys,

A buddy and I were talking about MPG on trucks. We both agreed that most of the comments are around how much MPG on these trucks drops as you go faster. It especially drops beyond 70 MPH. At the same time there is little discussion around MPG on the trucks if you drop the speed.

I decided to see what they are capable of. I recently ran my truck on a route I test vehicles on and my Super Duty got 23.8 MPG. This is mostly a highway run but it does include a 4% grade that is about 600 feet high. It's 8 miles long. I am trying to replicate a typical drive to the job, worksite, etc. and keep it consistent between vehicles.

For this test I drove the same exact road and came up with the scenario of "what if." What if there was a natural disaster or some sort of attack were you live and you had to bug out of town and get as far away as you could on a single tank of fuel. Time is not an object but MPG is the main goal.

I decided that speed at which these trucks get the best MPG was 45 MPH. The trucks can handle hills with no downshifting (costing fuel) and the balance between speed, wind resistance, being in 6th gear with low RPM's brought me to the 45 mph speed.

I got over 30 MPG on this test.

If I did this test in Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, or anywhere the ground is flat I bet the trucks would get over 35 mpg at 45 mph.

The test did show these trucks can go over 900 miles on a single tank ( I have the short wheelbase so the small tank) if you drive the right speed.

I know this test is a bit ridiculous...but curiosity got me and I was awake at 4:30 am yesterday morning...so why not.
