On the hot starts in the summer or really anytime try holding your foot on the accelerator pedal and with a steady foot give it just a little gas and hold it, just enough to crack the throttle plate and get some air in. I started doing that and it really changed things. My dad told me that a long time ago and of course I didn’t listen then but it does work.

Wow! I was hoping we could hear it eventually start. It's almost like you aren't getting gas. Do you press the gas pedal down during this starting?
I need to film mine. I'm not near that bad. Although, I do remember I had a time where I had to let it sit about 20 minutes before I was able to get it started. I know it's in my thread somewhere. I will need to find it and see what I did.

Edit: I found a thread on my truck dying and having to wait quite a while to start back up. That revolved around the carb: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...k-dying-2.html

I’ve done everything including no gas, a little gas, a little choke, full throttle, and starter fluid. It usually needs to sit for some time before it will start.

I have some new battery cables which hopefully will be ready this week, if that does not work I’m going to dig into the timing.

I am running into the hard hot start this summer, and found that giving WOT when I crank it works wonders. Just have to remember to get off the gas pedal as soon as it catches. Almost like my carb is flooded. Maybe I'm getting too much fuel in the bowl, though it doesn't run rich or smell of fuel under the hood in those situations. Could just be a a 68 year old engine being a bit cranky (no pun intended).

My cables are too small (thanks to the PO) and need to get new ones. I like the idea of 00 welding cable and making my own. My truck is still the original 6V system positive ground, and I aside from having to crank a bit more to start, I don't think the battery is charging as much as it should be. I have to leave it on a trickle charger overnight or it's dead the next morning. Nothing is left "on" overnight or pulling any voltage while the truck is at rest. The battery is over 4 years old, so it could just be that, too.

My local big truck repair shop finally finished my 6 volt cables, I’m pretty happy with them.

Because the terminals have a spline on them, I was going to skip the washer. Thoughts?

Very nice cables!
If you are going to use a spring lock washer then you need to use a flat washer under it to keep from cutting into the copper. I would use internal star lock washers (what I use) or Bellevile washers.

I use that technique too. Another one try is to let the engine turn over for a few revs then gently press on the accelerator. This works in case raw fuel has been boiling out of the carb into the intake manifold thus giving too rich of a mixture to fire. Turning the engine over before adding accelerator pumps the too rich mixture out of the combustion chamber thus clearing the way for a new shot of atomized fuel which happens when you give it a little gas while cranking.

Hi Chris. If starter fluid doesnt help, I am wondering if you have an ignition low spark issue. Like maybe a coil or condenser getting weak with heat. If you use a spark checker does the spark look good and strong when the engine is hot? I have had plug gaps change over time too and get a few thousands too far opened . Re gapping made a lot of difference for me.
