E40D Transmission bein a butthole

Hey guys so I’m new to the forum (Ive been on threads before just never signed up) and I am having a weird transmission issue. I recently got out of the Navy so I needed to drive my 95 Bronco home to Cincinnati. I was about 4 hours into driving I noticed the overdrive was shifting in at really high speeds like over 80 at least. But it was shifting fine otherwise so I didnt think much of it. I got halfway through south dakota and goin up a hill, i stepped on the gas a little bit to keep up speed And it wouldnt do anything, as if it was stuck in overdrive, just started slowing down until i pulled over. Put it in park then slapped it back into drive and it was shifting really hard in every gear. Stopped the truck for a few minutes then manually shifted from 1st to 2nd then to third and its driving fine. Got a ways up the road and pulled off, tried to let it shift on its own again and it was still shifting hard in low gears. Now heres all the goodies:
95 Bronco XLT
5.0L 302
E40D Trans
COMPLETE rebuild of the tranny was done a little less than 3k miles ago.
137k miles on the rest of the truck.

The rebuild is still under warranty but this whole situation has ticked me off because Im trying to get home, I’ll have to cripple it home I guess. Anyway, I just thought id ask yall to see if anyone might know if it wasnt a problem with the transmission, and maybe a torque converter issue?

My guess is that the engine is low on power. That will cause you to press the go pedal further, which makes the shift occur at higher speeds. The pressures that the trans uses for the shifts will be too high because they were programmed for an engine making more power.

To improve on my guesswork you need to get the codes read. Here is a way to do it with just a paperclip. https://www.troublecodes.net/ford/

Look at the wiring harness that goes to the trans. There is the shift switch (psom) and the shift pack plug on the passenger side. There are times where the plugs get full of stuff and the psom goes bad too.

also like said check codes. Get a code reader by innova I think. It will help you figure out things.

The PSOM is located on the back of the instrument cluster, not on the transmission. I think you're describing the MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor.) That is the sensor that tells the computer which position the shift lever is in.

That's very true, but even if it did happen on his truck it cannot cause the problem he's having.
