Dexter 6000# Torsion EZ Lube Axle
Hi,
I have a 24' Intech enclosed car trailer that has Dexter 6000# axles with EZ lube hubs.
The trailer was manufactured in 2017 and only has about 4000 miles on it.
When I returned from a long trip last weekend one on the wheels has grease blown out of the hub cap.
I'm new to this, so I just wanted to ask what happened, and what the correct repair should be.
I'm assuming the outer seal failed.
So................... should I replace just the outer seal, or replace the outer seal, bearing and inner seal.
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks...............

Outer cap may not have been installed tight or was greased sloppy or who knows. Probably didn't get dirt inside but I'd never feel good wondering so yep, clean and repack. I'll add inspect bearings and cups....might as well while they're clean. Will need new inner seals, new cotter pins and maybe outer cap/seal.

Just over greased when new. A long highway trip got it hot and it built some pressure and burped the grease out. Not an issue, other then cleaning up.
I've got 21 yrs on my Dexter axles, I over greased them years back and they made a mess. I pulled them down this spring for brakes. The entire bearing cavity was packed with grease. They don't really need a grease fitting in them.

I've never seen one that had an outer seal, just the metal cap. It probably popped off because of a hot run and expansion, possibly was over-filled. It might also just be a little tweaked and leaked excess grease without popping off. Clean up the mess and reinstall the cap, or replace if damaged. No reason to replace inner seals or do any other work unless the inner seal is blown or the bearings feel bad; loose or noisy.
My boat trailer has one fairly new axle. After the last launch I decided to do a bearing check, boat weighs about 11k so it's much easier to check with it off. One bearing was super loose and I was worried it was being eaten up. Nope, they forgot to put in the cotter pin and the nut loosened. I say this only to point out that they make stupid mistakes, and a loose/damaged cap wouldn't surprise me.

You assume it was overfilled. Regardless, there is absolutely no reason to replace any components that aren't damaged/defective on an axle with 4k miles.
