Question about after market rear AC

so I am looking at a 2006 E250 V8 cargo van to use as a transport for my dogs for dog shows. I want to put an AC unit back there for them as they are goldens and have thick coats and get hot.

What do do you recommend - heat in the winter is not as important - I really think these dogs would sleep in the snow if we let them. But being in California it gets REALLY hot here, so I want to put a roof top AC on.

Rooftop a/c will require you to get a generator.

If if you seek a different van with factory installed rear a/c then it’s simpler overall and doesn’t require a generator.

I say keep shopping

You can get an add-on rear AC/heater. Its done all the time on conversion vans. But you have to make sure the "tes" are in place up front ;under the hood to tie in the rear lines.Otherwise ,its a PITA. rick

are you talking about something that runs on your vehicle electrical system?

No, he's talking about an AC system similar to the rear AC system available from the factory, but it's an aftermarket add on. 12v rooftop systems are available, but they are very expensive and a larger alternator will also have to be installed, most likely. I agree that your best bet is to find a van with factory rear AC. You probably won't find a cargo van with it, though. You'll have to look for a passenger van. I have a window van, that I use as a cargo van and it has rear AC. It makes a huge difference when I run the rear AC on a hot day. I do have the rear windows covered in vinyl wrap that helps keep the sun out.

How much is it to install the generator and all that? I mean $2500 for a van is pretty good - and finding one with one installed is almost impossible - and the conversions have to much stuff in the back I would need to rip our to fit the crates ( they are in special crates that are made to with stand crashes)

Well, you can pick up a generator from Harbor Freight for under $500. The trick is going to be mounting it in such a way that you would feel comfortable running safely. Most of these generators are designed to run sitting out on the open ground. If you make some kind of enclosure for it, you will have to be sure it gets enough air to cool itself, and make sure that it safely discharges its exhaust.

You might consider one of those receiver-mounted cargo platforms, with appropriate weight rating, and mount the genset on it. But this will make opening the rear cargo doors difficult, and there is a theft risk.

If you get a 12-15 pass. van you can take out all the seats (and sell them) and use the mounts to hold down the cages. You can also remove the floor mounts if you need the smooth floor surface.

If you really wanted to go the route of a generator, you could get a front receiver hitch and mount a cargo basket up front and put the generator in it. Or if you have money to burn, you can have a custom front bumper fabbed to hold a generator , like a truck a company I used to work for had done.
