Can older engines run on B20? What does Ford state in owner's manual as to limits on Bio? Has Ford come out with statements that would change the allowances in Bio as of June 2018?

 

The 6.7 is certified to run up to B20 with no problems per Ford. The 6.0, 6.4 and 7.3 ought not have any problems.

6.4 was around 10% max as memory serves me right. Check the owners manual on service intervals with Bio, I know for the 6.4 you had to follow a severe duty service interval.

6.7, not so much.

 

I believe the 6.7L does specify bio-diesel as severe duty. One of a few problems is that you don't know what you will get in the bio as it can be made from several sources and you have no idea how long it has been sitting around. That is important as it is less stable and is prone to change during storage.

 

It's worth noting that per the manual for the 6.7l if you run B20 you should also be using full synthetic oil. I think many already do, but just a FYI if you do start using B20 on a regular basis.

When I was going through California most of the stations run Bio 20. I lost about 4mpg with that crap.

 

I'm glad that the good people of MN want this fuel in their state. I hope that their high demand for Bio fuel keeps it out of my state.

My '08 6.4L would run much quieter on bio, with no noticeable difference in MPG. Then the tank after bio would generally get 1-2 MPG better than normal.

 

I've never run b20 in any of my trucks..but I do know the 3116 CAT in my old GMC Topkick does not like B5-B10... noticeable loss in power and MPG..

My 6.7 also doesn't seem as peppy with it either and loses a little mpg..

If they are running B20, how are the older engines like my 6.9 IDI'S going to handle it? Bio sounds like it's going to be the ethanol of the diesel world...trashing the fuel systems of older engines and vehicles..

 

My bother in law is a Mn dot master mechanic and the state diesels have a lot of problems with the B20 in the winter! It gels up, clogs the filters and doesn't change back when warmed up, sounds like crap to me...

The old 6.9's run fine on it too.

 

On way to Nashville I stumbled on a Loves on I-40 (exit 87) and all they had was B20 at the "normal" pumps. I just got my "new to me" 2011 SD and didnt know what to do. I ended up going to Shell down the road.
