Won't Start in Park, Will in Neutral

My '03 F250, Lariat, CC, 4X4, V10, 50K miles will not start in park, but will start in neutral. It just started this AM, no problems before. Would it be the shift indicator cable, or the Transmission Range sensor, or something else? Thank you.

There are a couple of screws that hold the gear selector lever in place. I'd check that first. Crawl up under the dash and see if you can see where the lever connects to the column. You may have to remove the plastic steering column cover to get to them.

If I remember correctly, you'll need a torx screw driver to tighten things back up.

The Digital Transmission Range sensor (DTRS) is probably your problem.

It's right on the side of the tranny.

If the cable wasn't adjusted right, or stretched or something, enough to keep it from starting, it probably wouldn't stay in Park and would roll away

Thanks for the replies! I haven't had a chance to tear into it, yet. It has started in park 2X since posting 1st. I'll give an update as soon as I can.

I tightened up the screws, as above, and adjusted the cable, as per the Chilton manual. So far, so good. The DTRS is next if it acts up again. I really appreciate the input. I had also had a problem with the cruise control, and searched here on FTE to find the fix (loose brake switch on pedal). Thanks!

you should start a new thread and tell us what happens when it doesn’t start this one is almost 10 years old, does it crank and not stat does nothing all happened no cranking do you hear he fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on do you have electrical power. We need to know more that it won’t start.
