Tow/haul lamp flashing

Yesterday I got new tires put on and the shop rang to say they had the tow/haul lamp flashing. When I looked I also saw the transmission temp gauge was reading 0. Looked underneath and I've got a leak. Obvious thing was to put some more oil in and the lamp went out. Shifts were harder the 1/2 mile I drove before filling.

Not far into the 200 mile trip back home hauling a small trailer, maybe 4000lb, the lamp comes on again, gauge goes back down to 0. Shifts stay good. Had the wife meet me about 30 miles out with some more oil, but this time the tow/haul stayed on. Shifts stayed good. Pulled the following codes:
P0713-FF
P0336-60
P0341-60
U2023-60
So it looks to me like there's a cabling/voltage issue here, and this is the first thing I will check, together with where the leak is coming from. I will also look up what is common to them all - they were the only 4 codes I had and they all come back when deleted.

I will post updates, but if there is something obvious that has escaped me - searching with the iPhone not easy - please don't hold back!

Forgot to mention that I got a check gauges warning on the dash whenever the tow/haul came on.

Today: looked under the truck, no drips. Cleaned underneath with brake cleaner so I can see where oil is coming from. Turned key and the the trans temp gauge moved - good sign! Fired up, no alarms. Same 4 codes, delete them and Forscan crashes big time. Spend the next 5 mins trying to get it going again, motor idling, following 5 mins shunting the trailer, then check the oil level. It's a bit low. Put a quart in, now good, still no problems. Turn off, look underneath, no oil yet.

So was it low oil on a hot day (Oil smells and looks good), intermittent fault, or I got a visit from the Ford fairy?

The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor has been a problem in these transmissions. Your symptoms (except for the leak) fit that exactly. The sensor is located inside the pan on the solenoid body. The internal harness is sometimes the problem, but usually, it's the sensor itself.

Low oil and the hot day didn't have anything to do with the P0713 code. I don't know anything about the other codes.

Just got in to work, warning came on after 15 mins, went out and then stayed on the next half hour. Original sensor is now on order.

Also got the leak, it's coming out of the dipstick tube quite fast - I'm parked front right down. Hope that's not a big job...

Where the tube goes into the trans or where the top half goes into the short lower section that goes into the trans?
If I recall correctly there is an O-ring at the tube to tube junction. The place where the short tube goes into the trans
takes some oddball tool to R&R it.

Thanks Yahiko, just what I need! It's definitely where the tube goes into the transmission. Will have to park the other way around tomorrow, and look at the manual regarding replacement/repair

Transmission filler tube doesn't look difficult, just 2 bolts and replace an o-ring I ordered yesterday. Looked at replacing the oil pan as well but prices too high to justify a change to nice-looking.

I have some used stock 2006 pans that I know don't leak. The first one is from the last trans I did the 6.4L swap on and
the second will be on this new truck when I do the swap on it. Also I have a full 5R110W that is torn down and needs a
new coast clutch and then a normal rebuild.

You could always send me a round trip plane ticket and have me over for a
little vacation and I could pack one in the luggage. I'll make sure it is dirty
and say used bed pan on the forms.

Don't waste the money on a fancy pan -- few people will see it and it doesn't do anything for cooling. Just get the 6.4 pan and 6.4 internal filter -- best upgrade for the bux. And, I too would be willing to bring it over to you! Hell, you buy the plane tix and I'll even pay for the pan/filter and help put it on!

Let's see Sean one-up me on that...

Well I thought it was a given that I would pay fir the pan and filter.
But I will also stick in the 9 quarts and an extra trans temp sensor.

You know they have weight limits on baggage and oil is Heavy!

What oil would you be bringing...? LV, SP, Maxlife?

It could make a difference... But you win, I wasn't going to bring the temp sensor...

I need an airline job and you'd both be over here already, suitcases dripping with best LV ?

Sensor has cleared customs, be nice if it arrived today as it's a job that's much nicer when the sun is shining 😎

Thinking about these offers, anybody taking a trip to northern France is welcome to bring bits over that I need, guaranteed a big welcome and good bed!
