Front Hub issues.

Hello Everybody. I have a 1967 F-100 2WD, 352, Manual Transmission truck. I had a situation last year with my brakes caused by the cylinder leaking. I parked the truck for the winter. Just got around to fixing the issue. Replaced wheel cylinder, shoes, springs, drum. I had to get the hub and drum pressed apart. The studs were removed as well. The new drum fit on the hub without having to be pressed and the studs pressed back in with little effort. Got everything back together, bled the brakes and everything worked well for a while.

I have no hubcaps so I can see the hub. It was white, then I started seeing some black dust on the hub. I tried to pull the wheel off and all of the studs now spin and the lug nuts are stuck on. I pulled the wheel, hub and brake drum off as one unit. I drilled off all of the studs to separate everything. Then I came inside to search the forum. Thats when I saw a post by Number Dummy about NEVER reusing the studs. I guess this is what happens.

Now I have new studs and new lug nuts. Problem is the studs just push right into the hub. I think I am going to have the same problem all over again. I think I need a new hub and I cant find one at any of the parts outlets. Anybody have a similar problem? Where can I get a hub? maybe from somebody doing a disc conversion? Thanks for the help in advance.

Ford did not sell the hub by itself, it was only furnished with the drum.

C6TZ-1102-B .. Hub & Drum Assy - Use with 11" x 2" front brakes / Obsolete

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

I believe you can get oversize studs. The other possibility is to have new holes drilled in the hub. I don't think the holes that are there can be welded and re-drilled.

The problem is not the hub. The problem is the replacement drums and their holes. And/or the aftermarket studs. You need to go back to where you bought the studs and see if they have any oversize ones. Maybe there is a footnote in their catalog next to the drum listing.

Measure your studs and measure your holes. Then look at the online dorman stud catalog. You will most likely be able to get studs that fit locally.

Thanks for the reply guys. JEFFAFA, I dont think the problem was the hubs, but I reused the studs. I think I screwed the hubs up and made the holes just a little larger so now a new stud wont get any bite. I could press the new stud in with my thumb and it feels loose.

I have downloaded the dorman stud spreadsheet. How much oversized is enough? I measured the stud holes at 0.610. 0.615 is the size of the knurled part of a stock stud. Would a stud (610-039) that is 0.625 be too large or not enough? Or just right.

Thank you guy for your knowledge of these truck and willingness to share.

A quick fix would be to spot weld the studs on the outside of the hub. Either that or it's time for a disk brake swap.

Good point on the Disc swap. I dont have the funds for that now though. I thought about the spot welding thing but I have heard that it may weaken the hardened steel of the hub and stud.

Studs are cheap so if I can only find the correct size.....

Once you separate the hub from the drum, you should never reuse the studs!

The studs have serrations on them that retain them in place, once they're removed, the serrations flatten out.

When this occurs, reusing the studs will cause the drum to wobble on the hub. The drum could fly off...taking the wheel along with it. Not pleasant!

So I took the hub to the parts shop and they measured the hole. He got 0.620. He busted out the Dorman catalog and found some 0.623 studs in stock. I purchased those and came home and installed them, pulling them through with lug nuts. Put the whole thing back together then drove up and down the road. Looks like that is going to work. Thanks alot for all of the advice. I wish I would have read NumberDummys ,"never reuse the studs" advice before I did just that. It would have saved me a lot of headache and time.
