Must agree, get a dashpot. I do believe that Holley makes a dashpot with bracket for their carbs.

 

Thanks all for the wisdom. Upon getting the car ahem " road worthy " I discovered I have an ignition problem ( I think) so once I get that sorted I'll revisit the timing as adjusting the timing seemed to help but I may end up ordering the dashpot anyway.
