1970 "f200" build thread

Here's the build thread for my 1970 "f200" (combo of f100 and f250). The truck is a f100 short bed with a utility box. I bought the truck as a roller for $400. It had a Dana 60 in the rear end when I bought it and I decided to leave it as is. The front end is coming out of a '78 f250 and the motor and trans us coming out of a '75 f350. It's getting a 390 and a granny four speed. Hoping to make 400hp eventually. This will be a slow build so be patient with me lol! Here are a few pics of the truck. The last pic is the day I brought it home.

Fun project!

Uhmm... I don't see any 1970 grills... one sweet two-tone in the background, is that a dentside?... the utility bed truck has mis-matched grills... and a what? 1967?

It has '72 grills, but the door tag says '70. Yes the two tone is a dent side, '77 4wd. And yes, it's '67 in the background, it has a 429 in it, that's the main reason i have that truck.

This is not a utility bed, it's the Flareside bed that has had its rear fenders removed, replaced by utility bed sides.

Since Ford never offered a utility bed, you wouldn't see any with a Flareside tailgate.

The entire grille has been replaced. 1970 grille inserts have a checkerboard aka egg crate pattern, but these will only fit the 1970 grille frame.

1971/72 grille frame is different than 1970, the inserts are specific to 1971 or 1972, but this trucks grille frame has one of each.

i knew that the bed was the original step side bed that had been converted, but i did not know that the '70 grille shell differed from the '71-'72. Thanks for the info!

Ok, little update. Got the f250 front i beams out of the 78 parts truck. All looks as it should, gonna order new radius arm bushings, i beam bushings, shocks, and brake lines to start with. I have the front clip (fenders, grille, and hood) ready to come off the truck. Hoping to do the swap sometime in the very near future. Also, i found out that the AM/FM radio that someone along the line swapped in still works! What years was the step side tail gate made through?

Does anyone know where i can get a set of the camper special side-view mirrors? Also, my end goal for the truck is to have a restored daily driver. The paint is going to be a metallic forest green with a white roof. Interior is probably going to be either tan or grey, and i think I'm going to get some white wagon wheels.

I've got a set... sort of
I pulled them from my totaled '70 before it went to the junkyard.
The RH mirror isn't a Ford product... it's a vintage Peterbuilt mirror. I appreciate the extra view space it provides.
They're a little bent up and the mounting hardware should probably be replaced with new.
I'll try to get a picture or two in the next couple of days.

The Western Junior High mount mirrors that came with the Camper Special package have a 3rd steady rest arm and these mirrors stick out well past the cab.

Ford also offered Western Junior "Swing-Lock" high mount mirrors without the 3rd arm. No pic of the 3rd steady rest arm mirrors in the 1964/72 truck catalog.

Here's the pic from the 1973/79 catalog, See TYPES 2 & 3:

All right, here are a few more pics. Pulled it into the shop last night and did some work here and there. Cleaned up some wiring, scraped the nasty mat that was on top of the boxes, lubricated the windows, and cleaned up some stuff underneath. Mostly just busy work until my parts for my front end come in and I get my motor.

Ok, so it's been a while since I've posted anything about the old girl. So far, I've pulled the interior completely apart and have repainted the inside of the truck. I've decided to just stick with the paint that's on the truck on the outside. I don't mind the beat up exterior, but i like my interior nice and my engine bay neat and tidy. I've rewired half of the cab and added some led interior lights behind the seat and under the dash. Also, i've pulled the toolboxes off the side of the truck and have begun to clean them up a bit. I finally found out what my gear ratio is as well, it appears to be around 3.00 or whatever the dana 60 went up to. I have all of the stuff to finish the f250 swap and i plan to work on that some more this next week. I'll try to get some pictures up soon if i can. Thanks for looking y'all!

At long last i can hold up to the name of the thread! i now have a 3/4 ton 1/2 ton (f200)! Just finished up the swap about five minutes ago and my word, the truck looks so much better with the bigger tires and wheels. Everything went really really smoothly and looks like it's going to work really well. More updates to come as i continue making progress.

Congrats, the rear gear is most likely a 3.54 as that was a common ratio.

Well, the build has taken another turn... (what are the odds of that? lol). I recently had the chance to purchase a good 300 L6 engine and manual transmission from my cousin so i've decided to build that instead of the 390. It's getting the Offenhauser 4 barrel intake, efi exhaust manifolds, Cam Research cam shaft, Edelbrock carb, and i'm going to have the head shaved as much as i possibly can without jacking up my pushrod lengths and other such things. The engine runs as is but has a dead miss which i think is caused by bad spark plugs and an air leak. I did a compression test before i pulled the motor and they all read a little over 100psi. My next project on the truck is the brakes. I ordered a new master cylinder, pulled a proportioning valve out of the 3/4 parts truck and cleaned out the front steel lines. After i get the brakes going, I'm going to put the engine on a stand, pull it apart, make sure it doesn't have any cracked pistons, put a gasket kit in it, new freeze plugs, spark plugs/wires, water pump, and it already has a brand new fuel pump so i don't need to worry about that. Thanks for reading! More updates to come!
