new to site need opinions about old VIN

Just sweeping up the shop after working on what I'm told is a 48 COE, I found a VIN plate on the floor. Top Line reads: M 5 131 SAG, Bottom Line reads: F57A5E212GD Any ideas as to what this is?....Problem is I've also been working on a 1957 Mercury Meteor Ranchero as well as a 1952 Ford Crestline Sunliner convertible and a 1949 F1. All have been in and out without clean up in the past few days.

My guess would be the M 5 131 Sag is the 48 COE. the 131 is likely the wheel base M is for Mercury and 5 the class of truck. I won't even venture a guess on the SAG which could be origin of plant it was assembled at..

Thanks 56, I also think that the M was for mercury...my ranchero was built in Canada, so possibly this was too. Ford built some trucks in Canada under the Merc name. I live only 30 miles from the Canadian border.so we sometimes get these immigrants. I'll check the wheelbase.

For 49F3, I'll try to get some pics on the site.

Thanks for the quick responses. Dave

F3 is a 1 ton conventional cab truck or a Parcel Delivery.

COE would be a F5 or F6, or if a Merc: M5 or M6

Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. assembled both Ford & Mercury cars & trucks for the Canadian market. These vehicles were not sold new in the US

The VIN you posted has to be related to a Canadian vehicle. Thru 1965, Canadian VIN's are different than US VIN's.

I've owned quite a few 1950's US cars, including a '57 Ranchero, and I don't recognize this VIN

None of those numbers on that tag came from either the 48 or 49 trucks - neither US or CAN

Can't say about the other rigs.

You can look at the Ranchero and Crestline for the chassis serial stampings and see if their numbers match your tag. Canadian tag decode info is difficult to find. From my experience, Ford seemed to change the codes and serial string orientation quite often in Canada, where it was a bit more standardized in the US. Here's a couple links that, while not directly related, may help get you started.
